Big Society - challenges faced by our young people Young people told us: ➔ Key issue is a lack of confidence –Mental health and relationship breakdown with family –Awareness of lack of skills, qualifications, opportunity ➔ No money, housing problems ➔ Lack of qualifications ➔ Lack of entry level jobs, work experience ➔ Need support to navigate the system (advice, guidance)

Big Society – policies that will affect our young people ➔ Welfare reform –22% say need more entry level jobs to get off benefit dependency ➔ National Citizen Service –42.3% of young people in favour ➔ Staying in education, training until 18 –66.3% of young people in favour ➔ Apprenticeships –48.5% of young people in favour

Eric Pickles – Communities Secretary ➔ The coalition “will promote the radical devolution of power and greater financial autonomy to local government and community groups. This will include a full review of local government finance.” ➔ Big Society - empowering communities, giving new power and rights to neighbourhood groups, encouraging volunteering. The Big Society Bank (unclaimed assets). Cross-departmental responsibility ➔ We will: –Review and influence, where appropriate, on changes to local government structures (RDAs, Gov Offices for regions) and finance –Identify opportunities to influence Local Authorities via CLG and maintain contact with LGA –Review Tory comments which questioned ability of local authorities to deliver youth services and desire to have more run by voluntary sector – position PT to deliver

Mentoring for offenders –121 programme GateMate, positioning for funding DCOMS: Maintain funding for Opportunity 2012, identify any new funding opportunities e.g. for Get Started Health: Maintain contact with Department of Health on Get Into Social Care & Hospital Services funding opportunities - secondment from DH
