Think (30 Secs) Think about what you will do in the situation below. Imagine that someone is blackmailing you for $1,000. If you do not pay, they will tell your parents (or friends, boyfriend, etc) your deepest darkest secret. You have the money to pay them….but you really don’t want to.

Write (45 secs) Take 45 seconds to to write what you do about being blackmailed. I think I would….

Share (A/B) Share with your partner what you would do about being blackmailed. You will have 30 secs to share your thoughts. If you finish before time is up go into detail. Partner B will go first then partner A.

Challenges Election of 1796 ● Federalist vs Democratic-Republican party ● Two Federalist running against one Demo- Repub es/cleardot.gif Results ●Adams 71, Jefferson 68, and Pinckney 59. o Adams takes Jefferson as Vice-President. o Does not trust Hamilton and Pinckney.

Read (228) Purpose: 1. To identify the challenges the Adams faced during his presidency 2. To identify and describe the XYZ Affair Strategy: Write your answers in your notebook and discuss your findings with your partner

XYZ Affair The French and the U.S. were fighting and then France attacked U.S. ships. Adams sent three diplomats to France to settle their dispute. The French officials said they would not talk to the U.S. unless they were paid $250,000. The U.S. did pay the French and many Americans were upset and wanted war. Because the French officials were known as X, Y, and Z, this became known as the XYZ Affair.

XYZ The American commissioners refuse and talks break up in April –American ships and French ships begin to attack each other. –Federalists want Congress to declare war to restore American honor. –"Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute!" –Adams and the commissioners become national heroes.
