2 Election of 1796 After George Washington retired and gave his Farewell Address, there was a race for president sponsored by political parties Political Parties: Groups that help elect government officials and shape government

3 America’s First Official Political Parties FederalistsDemocratic Republicans -John Adams and Charles Pickney ran for this party -Want a strong federal government -Called “Republicans” ***This is NOT the same as Republicans today*** -Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr ran for this party -favor limited federal government

4 Election of 1796 “Continued” After arguing back and forth John Adams won the election!!! Thomas Jefferson became the vice president because he came in 2 nd Place

5 The first issue as president John Adams dealt with was the XYZ Affair. He sent diplomats over to France to make peace.

6 Gimme Yo $Money$ French leader Charles Maurice De Tallyrand sent 3 secret agents to meet the U.S. men and demand $250,000 for their leader and $10 Million for the French Government

7 John Adams refused! He increased the size of the U.S. Navy for protection. John Adams nicknamed the 3 agents “X” “Y” “Z” The American people were outraged to find this and began to shout. Millions for Defense, Not one cent for tibute Adams avoided war to talk more peace with France but he was criticized for being too weak. Adams’ Decision

8 Alien and Sedition Acts Because of the attacks by the French, Federalists thought the national government needed more protection so Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts Alien Act- said the president could remove foreign residents if it were believed they were against U.S. Government

9 Sedition Act- said U.S. citizens cannot join any plots against the U.S. government –Many people were arrested and jailed under these acts Virginia and Kentucky fought back – They each made laws for their states which said these acts were unconstitutional because the national government was abusing its power. The acts were later not renewed

10 Election of 1800 “All Tied Up!” The election of 1800 was historical! Republican candidates: Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr Federalist Candidates: John Adams and Charles Pickney

11 There was a tie for 1 st ! between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. The House of Representatives had to break the tie by voting –It took them an amazing 30 times to finally elect Jefferson. –Burr became the Vice President

12 12 th AMENDMENT 12 th Amendment- created a separate ballot for Vice President To avoid future ties
