Improving the Quality of Life and the Standards of Services for Children with Disabilities through Capacity Building & Strengthening of Civil Society in Ukraine Lesya Kalandyak Matra-Project

Population: 46 million Children with disabilities: 177,600 62,000 children with disabilities live in state-run institutions

Internats for children and adults subordinated to the Ministry of social policy of Ukraine Psychoneurological internats for adults (30 375) Geriatric homes for elderly and disabled (9 158) Internats for children and youth with disabilities (6 879) In Ukraine 324 internats

Project goals Matra Program  Capacity building of trainers and care providers.  Strengthening civil society.  Development and implementation of adequate policies.

Training of Care Providers Training of Care Providers Objectives:  Development of a “basic care” course for health professionals in the level 3-4 internats.

Ladyzyn Kalynivka Znamyanka 32 level 3-4 Internats

Training of Care Providers 5 step program 1) on location identification of Needs 2) didactical training of Ukraine expert team 3) design of basic care training 4) performing the training 5) evaluation and plan next steps

Working on the “The State Standard on Quality of services of long- term care for children with severe physical and mental disabilities” The Netherlands November 2009

Results  300 personnel members from 10 level 3-4 internats were trained in providing basic care for children with severely disabilities  32 nurses and doctors from 25 internats were trained in assessment, treatment and prevention of malnutrition  50 children recovered from severe malnutrition  Improved quality of life of 1300 children with disabilities  8 professionals from rehabilitation centre Dzherelo became trainers

Early intervention  Professional development of 6 Ukrainian EI teams  Development of Ukrainian network of EI  Influencing policies
