Student’s life in the USA: Activities and Traditions

At the beginning of the century, many colleges and universities have a broad educational mission: to develop the "whole student." Students become involved in extracurricular activities not only for entertainment, social, and enjoyment purposes, but most important, to gain and improve skills. A wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities exists on U.S. campuses, meeting a variety of student interests.

Sports Cheerleading Radio Newspaper Student’s activities

Almost every college and university in the United States offers some type of intercollegiate and intramural athletics. Student athletes may "try out" for intercollegiate sports teams such as volleyball, basketball or football.

Cheerleading is a sport using organized routines, usually ranging from 1 minute to 3 minutes, such as tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting to direct spectators of events to cheer on sports teams at games and matches. In addition to cheering at games and competing, professional cheerleaders also, as teams, do a lot of philanthropy and charity work, modeling, motivational speaking, television performances, and advertising.

Campus radio is a type of radio station that is run by the students of a college, university or other educational institution. Programming may be exclusively by students, or may include programmers from the wider community in which the station is based. Many campus radio stations carry a variety of programming including news (often local), sports (often relating to the campus), and spoken word programming as well as general music. Often the format is best described as a freeform radio format, with a lot of creativity and individualism among the disc jockeys and show hosts.

A student newspaper is a newspaper run by students of a university, high school, middle school, or other school. These papers traditionally cover local and, primarily, school or university news. Due to the rise in adoption of computers and Internet, many high schools and colleges have begun offering online editions of their publications, as well as printed copies.

College traditions Harvard: Harvard students unwind the night before the first day of final exams during Saturday's biannual "Primal Scream" naked run around Harvard Yard.

Emory University: The unofficial mascot of the university is Dooley, a skeleton figure dressed in black. In the spring during Dooley's Week, he wanders the campus, showing up in classrooms to let students out of class. (Atlanta, GA)

University of Louisiana -- Lafayette: The Walk of Honor comprises bricks inscribed with the name and graduation year of all alumni.

Hoods are the most distinctive part of the American academic dress. Length three feet for the bachelor's degree, three and onehalf feet for the master's degree, and four feet for the doctor's degree. Hoods are lined with the official colors of the college, reflecting the color of the bearer's academic field. For all academic purposes, the color indicating the Fields of Learning are: White: Art, Letters, Humanities; Copper: Economics; Light Blue: Education; Brown: Fine Arts; Green: Medicine Pink: Music; Dark Blue: Philosophy; Sage Green: Physical Education Golden Yellow: Science;

Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we'll ever, yea forever Give ourselves in loyalty. True forever, true forever, To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly. Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true, To old Morehouse, and her ideals, And in all things that we do. College Hymn DEAR OLD MOREHOUSE J. O. B. Moseley
