S PALDING The Spalding Method is a complete language arts method. It involves listening, speaking, spelling, writing, and reading. Lessons are divided into three main areas: spelling, writing, and reading. During spelling students learn: Oral Phonograms (OPR) Written Phonograms (WPR) and Handwriting Spelling Words (15 spelling words per week, begins Grading Pd. 3) During writing lessons students learn: To use words in oral sentences and then written sentences. To use capitals, finger spaces, and ending punctuation. During reading lessons students learn: To read words, sentences, and stories. To comprehend stories that they hear or read.

S AXON M ATH Saxon Math is a spiraling math program where concepts are introduced and revisited continuously. Students are able to interact with these concepts in multiple ways through all parts of the program. Progress is monitored through daily observation of student practice and also through written assessments. Math Meeting: Calendar Skills Counting Patterns Money Math Lesson: Daily math lessons are taught using the multi sensory approach. Students will use manipulatives when applicable. Guided Class Practice: The Guided Class Practice provides students with practice for new concepts and reviews previously introduced concepts. The back of the Guided Class Practice will be sent home for homework. Written Assessments: Written Assessments will be given every 10 lessons. The teacher reads the problems and students complete the assessment independently.

I MAGINE I T, S CIENCE, AND S OCIAL S TUDIES Our supplemental reading program is Open Court’s “Imagine It”. It is composed of themes that focus on letter recognition, vocabulary, literature, poetry, and reading skills that enhance comprehension. Our science program is Macmillan/McGraw Hill. It teaches Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science. This program teaches students based on the 5-E’s: engage, explore, explain, evaluate, and extend. Our Harcourt Social Studies Program focuses on developing students awareness of self, family, the community, and jobs.

K INDERGARTEN S UMMER C ONNECTION P ACKET Make the most out of your Summer Connection Packet. Take a moment to look through the packet with your child. Pick activities that you would enjoy together. Focus on learning letter and number names, writing their first name (using correct pencil grip), and also knowing the colors and basic shapes. Enjoy reading together, and don’t be afraid to ask your child questions about what you read (who, what, where, when, why). We are excited to meet our new students in the fall!
