4.6 – AREA FORMULAS

Formulas from yesterday: Perim.of a Rect.= Area of a Rect.=

Formulas from yesterday: Perim.of a Square= Area of a Square=

Parallelogram: A figure with opposite sides that are PARALLEL and EQUAL in length. b h This is the HEIGHT Drawn to the BASE Formula for Area:

The HEIGHT is measured from one side of the parallelogram to the other at a 90 degree angle. The BASE is a side of the parallelogram that the height meets at a 90 degree angle.

Example: Find the perimeter and area of a parallelogram with sides inches by inches and a height of 6 inches drawn to the -inch side. PerimeterArea Formula: Equation: Solution:

TRIANGLES: Since a triangle is ONE HALF of a parallelogram the area of a triangle can be found by taking ONE HALF of the area of the parallelogram. This is the HEIGHT Drawn to the BASE Formula for Area: b h

The height of a triangle is measured from one of its vertices to the OPPOSITE side at a 90 degree angle. The base is the SIDE that the height intersects at a 90 degree angle.

Example: Find the perimeter and area of a triangle with sides of 10.2 cm, 3.56 cm, and 12.8c m. With a height of 2.8 cm and a base of 10.2 cm. PerimeterArea Formula: Equation: Solution:

TRAPEZOIDS: A trapezoid is a QUADRILATERAL with two opposites sides that are parallel. The parallel sides are called BASES. The height of a trapezoid is measured from one base to the other at a 90 DEGREE angle. Formula for Area: b1b1 h b2b2 s2s2 s1s1

Example: Given a trapezoid with the following dimensions find its perimeter and area: PerimeterArea Formula: Equation: Solution:
