A storm wrecks the ship carrying King Alonso of Naples, his son Ferdinand and other passengers. Prospero tells Miranda that he has caused the shipwreck and that he used to be Duke of Milan. Prospero and Miranda were put into the sea in a boat but they did not drown. Prospero’s brother Antonio and the King of Naples plotted to overthrow Prospero.

Gonzalo puts food, water, clothes and books into the boat for Prospero and Miranda. They landed on the island where they have lived for 12 years with a spirit, Ariel, and a monster, Caliban. Ariel caused the storm and Ferdinand, King Alonso’s son, is washed up on the island. He falls in love with Prospero’s daughter Miranda. Previously the island was ruled by an evil witch called Sycorax. She was Caliban’s mother. She had imprisoned Ariel and Prospero releases him.

Alonso and others land on a different part of the island. Antonio and Sebastian plot to murder Alonso. Trinculo and Stephano meet Caliban and get him drunk. Miranda asks Ferdinand to marry her.

Caliban asks Stephano to kill Prospero. Ariel accuses Alonso, Antonio and Sebastian of crimes against Prospero. Prospero uses his magic to put on a masque play to bless Ferdinand and Miranda’s engagement. Prospero and Ariel prevent Caliban’s plot from succeeding and punish the monster, Stephano and Trinculo.

Prospero reveals his true identity and is given his lands and title back. Prospero reveals to Alonso that Ferdinand is alive. Prospero returns to Milan to become Duke once more. Miranda will marry Ferdinand. Ariel is given his freedom.
