Average Speed Practice Problems KMS 8th Grade Science

1. Mae took a non-stop flight to visit her grandmother. The 750 mile trip took 3 hours and 45 minutes. (or 3.75 hours). Because of the bad weather, the return trip took four hours and 45 minutes ( or 4.75 hours). What was her average speed for the round trip?

2. A car drives 12 m [S] for 5.0 seconds, then 18 m [N] for 9.0 seconds, and finally 15 m [S] for 11 seconds. Calculate the average speed.

3. Tara travels 53 kilometers from her home to Boston. It takes her 40 minutes. What speed did Tara travel?

4. Katie traveled home from Boston. She covers 5 kilometers in 5 minutes. Then has to stop for 3 minutes because of traffic. Then she continues her travels of 48 kilometers in 30 minutes. What is Katie’s average speed on her way home from Boston?

5. What is the velocity of a squirrel that runs 150 meters in 40 seconds toward the neighbor’s house on the left?

6. Suzie plans a trip to Baltimore Inner Harbor which is 300 miles away. It takes her 4 hours to get there. What speed did she drive to arrive in 4 hours?

7. Matthew made a diving catch in center field in which the baseball went 70 meters in 2 seconds. What velocity did the ball travel?

8. Danielle took her dog for a walk. She traveled 300 meters in 2 minutes until her dog needed a break to sniff around for 0.5 minutes. She continued her walk for another 400 meters back home (around the block) for another 5 minutes. What is Danielle’s average speed?
