Mechanical Engineering Department ME 322 Operation and Management of Power Plants Prof. Osama A El Masry 1. Overall aims of course The main objective of the course is to teach the students the following:- 1-To further develop the student’s background on modern power plants, their selection, economics and management. 2-To develop the student’s knowledge of advanced energy management such as cogeneration, heat recovery and environmental issues. 3- Use of computer to obtain efficiency and performance curves for different power cycles and to design different components of steam and GT power plants. 4- Course Project: The student will select a title from a list which addresses different topics of modern power plants. The student is required to research the topic, prepare a report and present his work to the class.

Intended learning outcomes of course (ILOs( a- Knowledge and understanding: a1-Engineering study of the power generation cycles: Steam Turbines, Steam Generator, Gas turbines…. a2- Study of the power plant Components, Auxiliary Systems, Operation Control and maintenance a3-Energy Management: Combined cycle power plants-power and heat cogeneration-load curve analysis-economics of power generation- environmental impacts of power plants a4- The constraints which a mechanical engineers have to judge and reach at an optimum solution.
