Implementing the iPod with Four Skills in the CM program Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center Lisa H. Brock March 7, 2009

In the last decade, technology has moved from the periphery into our everyday lives; it has become a pervasive part of how we live, work, and learn. Networked communications and computer technology have transformed the modern workplace, touching nearly every career and job category. Reflecting these dramatic changes, schools, too, are evolving by altering their educational goals, as well as the strategies and resources they use to achieve these goals. Educators at nearly every level are examining the tools required to produce the 21st century skills that today’s students need to succeed in their school, work, and civic lives.

This presentation will focus on how to use the iPod to enhance language learning in and out of the classroom.

iPod’s Functions 1. Listening --Speaking 2. Reading --Speaking 3. Watching --Speaking 4. Observing --Speaking 5. Writing --Speaking

What we can do with the iPod  Sound Files — news/stories/songs/movies  With questions (for listening & reading)  Text/test/transcriptions  Recording responses  Turning in the clips (results) in the class share folder. ** This activity can be done in/out of the classroom. CIR = Challenge, Individual, Responsible

1. Listening--Speaking  News/stories/movies are with questions. The questions should be recorded or written  These questions can be put before or after the news…; that is, depending on how the teachers request or design the activity.  Transcription is shown on the screen with sound simultaneously.

2. Reading--Speaking  Vocabulary  Phrases  Articles  Questions with the articles should be recorded or writtenwritten

3. Watching--Speaking VIDEOS: News/interviews/movie clips TASKS:  Vocabulary Pattern Notes  Questions & Answers  Retelling/Summary  Opinions  …………

4. Observing --Speaking  Start from the taped video provided by the teacher  Work as journalist/ reporter (Report what you see—Sunday in the park, party, class activity, place, building, people……)  Practice the OPI tasks—narration; description; instruction; news ** Live report (Students’ experiences while they are engaged in sth. ) ** Share the reports in the classShare the reports in the class

5. Writing--Speaking  Vocabulary  Speaking outlines  Write a short essay and record it  Turn in the clip as a writing homework  Teacher provides the recording feedback for the students about the written homework

Hope this presentation can provide some ideas to you in your teaching. Thanks!
