1909 First North Carolina corn club formed in Ahoskie, Hertford County North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts signed agreement with USDA to develop corn clubs and demonstration programs

1911 Jane McKimmon hired to oversee tomato clubs for girls

1913 Women began to form home canning clubs 4-H logo adopted, used to label tomato club cans

1914 Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act The first agricultural clubs for African- American boys began in Sampson County

1916 Home Demonstration and Girls 4-H Clubs Formally Split

1916 Community Club Work in the Study of Foods and Household Conveniences Published Potatoes are valued chiefly for the starch which they contain, but are too bulky to give sufficient nourishment unless served with some protein food. Sugar is a valuable fuel food and energy producer. It is pleasing to the taste and relieves fatigue.
