Human Rights 4 me presentation by Sofi Taylor Health Improvement Lead (Equality and Diversity) NHS GG&C Mental Health Services

Human Rights 4 me After the second world war, a lot of governments got together and set up an organisation called the United Nations. Because of what happened in the war, where many people were killed, the United Nations put a charter together they called it: United Nation Declaration of Human Rights. This Declaration became law in this country in 2000 and became the Human Rights Act.

Human Rights 4 me This Act said that we are all equal citizens; this means that all people, including people with learning disabilities have the same human rights. It says that organisations that are ‘public authorities’ like the health services, social works, schools, colleges, police service and others have to protect and support everyone’s human rights. It is not always easy to know what a ‘public authority’ is, so it is good to ask.

Human Rights 4 me A right is something you are allowed to do. The government and all your public services must respect your rights. Some rights, like the right to life, can never be taken away. Other rights, like the right to free speech, might have to be balanced because of the rights of others.

Human Rights 4 me European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is an agreement passed by the Council of Europe. This group of countries have come together after the Second World War to stop such terrible acts happening again. It has its own court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. You can go to this court to claim your rights under the Convention and you can also use the courts in this country, too.

Human Rights 4 me There are many Articles in the Human Rights Act: just remember Article is the same as Section. A protocol is something that is added at the end of a Article. There are also many other ‘conventions’ that made up part of the Human Rights Act such as the right to vote is in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Human Rights 4 me There are many rights in the Human Rights Act:, here are some of the rights: The Right to life The Right not to be torture, or treated in an inhuman or degrading treatment. The Right to liberty and security of person The Right to a fair hearing The Right to a private and family life and correspondence Freedom of expression The Right to marry and found a family The prohibition of discrimination The protection of property The Right to Education

Human Rights 4 me Here are the 5 principles that guide us: PANEL 1.Participation 2.Accountability 3.Non discrimination and Equality 4.Empowerment 5.Legality

Human Rights 4 me Types of Rights: Absolute Rights Qualified Rights Limited Rights / Proportionate Rights
