NARRATIVE WRITING Add this to your Notebook!

Narrative Writing Tells a story or recounts events Narrative Writing has the following elements –Plot –Characters –Setting –Theme

Point of View Most narratives are written in 1 st Person Following the thoughts and feelings of one character

POINT OF VIEW STORY

The Paper You are going to rewrite The Lottery from one of the character’s point of view You may pick a character!

Let’s Practice Changing Point of View Cinderella A rich man's wife became sick, and when she felt that her end was drawing near, she called her only daughter to her bedside and said, "Dear child, remain pious and good, and then our dear God will always protect you, and I will look down on you from heaven and be near you." With this she closed her eyes and died. From Cinderella’s POV My mom was really sick. Like terribly, about to die, not going to make it to tomorrow, sick. But before she died she told me, “Remain pious and good, and then our dear God will always protect you, and I will look down on you from heaven and be near you.” And then she was gone. My mom was gone.

Cinderella The girl went out to her mother's grave every day and wept, and she remained pious and good. When winter came the snow spread a white cloth over the grave, and when the spring sun had removed it again, the man took himself another wife. Cinderella’s POV I went to my mom’s grave every single day. It made me feel closer to her. I tried to remain pious and good, but it was hard. The first winter was the worst, even though it made her grave look beautiful. And when I was finally starting to get used to the idea of not having my mom around my dad went and married someone new.

Your Turn Cinderella This wife brought two daughters into the house with her. They were beautiful, with fair faces, but evil and dark hearts. Times soon grew very bad for the poor stepchild. "Why should that stupid goose sit in the parlor with us?" they said. "If she wants to eat bread, then she will have to earn it. Out with this kitchen maid!" Cinderella’s POV

Brainstorm Take a few minutes to brainstorm about the different characters in The Lottery Write a character’s name in a circle Draw lines coming from the circle with different character traits Do this for a couple of characters!

Free Write Pick your favorite character –Use your brainstorming to help pick one! Spend the rest of class free writing as the character –Include details from the story –Come up with some new character traits for them! –Include details not in the story!
