Georgia O’Keefe

Georgia was born When she was 10 years old she took painting lessons. By the time she was 13, she knew she wanted to be an artist.

O’Keefe had many art lessons but many teachers discouraged her. They wanted her to paint what they saw, rather than what she saw

She decided to draw what she wanted. Her vision of art was original and imaginative.

Georgia studied at The Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. She eventually moved to be with her family in Virginia. She studied under Alon Bemont at the University of Virginia.

Georgia moved to Texas for a few years and taught art in the public schools

One of Georgia’s friends sent her work to New York. Alfred Stieglitz, a powerful art figure showed her work in his galleries.

Georgia and Alfred became friends and in 1924 they were married. Alfred was a photographer. Both of them became famous.
