SPF-calculation methods in Finland IEA annex 39 meeting in Tokyo Jussi Hirvonen Finnish Heat Pump Association SULPU ry

Finnish SPF-calculation methods The simplified and detailed energy calculation methods of heat pumps were published as Finnish guideline in The simplified method: –Part of the Finnish building code D5 (2012). –Based on tabulated default values of SPF-factors which have been calulated with the detailed calculation method. –Back up heat energy is approximated by means of relative heating energy of heat pumps (a function of e.g. power sizing of HP, Finnish weather zones..) –Input data tested in accordance with SFS-EN , SFS-EN or confirmed by other means is accepted. –Suitable for air/air, air/water and brine/water heat pumps. –The use of SPF-factors calulated with other methods is accepted. –The translated English version is available in the internal workspace of Annex 39: (shared documents\Task1\FI contribuition)

Finnish SPF-calculation method The detailed method: –Bin method for the calculation of SPF-factor and energy consumption of heat pumps. –Simplified version of SFS-EN , which does not include all the features of the standard. –Input data tested in accordance with SFS-EN , SFS-EN or confirmed by other means is accepted. –Additional test point for air source heat pump (-20°C) is recommended because of the Finnish cold climate. –Suitable for air/air, air/water and brine/water heat pumps. –The Finnish version ”Lämpöpumppujen energialaskentaopas ” is available at the web pages of Environmental Ministry:

Suggested SPF calculation method Detailed hourly method: –Developed in the ongoing Finnish SPF-project. –Hourly method for the calculation of SPF-factor and energy consumption of heat pumps. –Length of the time step of the calculation can be selected, but 1hour is a default value. –Suitable for air/air, air/water and brine/water heat pumps. Both on-off and capacity controlled heat pumps taken into accout. Part load operation of the heat pump is taken into account. Combined DHW (Domestic Hot Water) and space heating production in alternate heating operation is supported. (DHW is primary) –D.Sc. Riikka Holopainen sent the translated English version of the method to the partners of Annex 39 by in

Suggested SPF calculation method Required input data of the hourly method: Heat pumps: –Input data tested for example in accordance with SFS-EN , SFS-EN or SFS-EN at least in one test point. The use of several test points is suggested. Buildings and external conditions: –Hourly heating power demand of spaces, ventilation and DHW or their annual heating energy demand. –Min. and max. supply water temperature of a heat distribution system. –Set point temperature of space heating and DHW. –Design outdoor temperature of space heating. –Outdoor temperature. –Brine temperature from the heat source in the case of brine/water heat pump. –Exhaust air temperature and humidity in the case of (exhaust) air- water heat pump.

Suggested SPF calculation method Results of the hourly method: –Hourly heating power and annual heating energy produced by heat pump. –Hourly and annual electricity consumption of heat pump including auxiliary devices. –Hourly heating power and annual heat energy of backup heater. –SPF-factor of heat pump.
