Pump Room Hazard Incident Marine Chemist Association 2012 National Seminar Chicago, IL August 13, 2012

Pump Room Hazard Incident 27 April 2001 Commandant Notice CONFINED SPACE ENTRY POLICY ABOARD MERCHANT VESSELS FOR MARINE SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PERSONNEL

Pump Room Hazard Incident Current guidance for confined space entry is in the form of recommended Safe Work Practices (SWP’s) contained in the Marine Safety Manual (MSM), Volume I, Chapter 10. Although much of the guidance in the MSM has been modified over the years and has been incorporated into SWP’s in the current version, the general policy of requiring an NFPA Certificated Marine Chemist to test and certify confined spaces prior to entry by Coast Guard personnel has not changed.

Pump Room Hazard Incident Commandant Notice Who must certify confined spaces on merchant vessels safe for entry by Coast Guard personnel?

Pump Room Hazard Incident Commandant Notice A Certified Marine Chemist shall conduct the initial inspection and certify confined spaces on merchant vessels “Safe for Workers” before entry by Coast Guard personnel.
