When 21, he added “w”to his name Hathorne) years of literary apprenticeship, living in his mother’s home in Salem, Massachusetts ( silent years, writing gloomy stories, walking alone late at night, and reading some two hundred literary books a year) 4. Befriending Thoreau, working in Brook Farm, cooking and shoveling manure 5. July 9, 1842, he married Sophia Peabody
