Introduction The Mental health research training project is linked to PRIME-K a Medical Education Partnership Initiative Project of the CHS/UON It is a funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a Component funding Organization of the National Institute of Health (NIH USA) It is a Collaboration between University of Nairobi and University of Washington 3 rd year of implementation

Overall objective of project Build mental health research capacity in Kenya in order to improve both psychiatric and general health outcomes

Specific Objectives- AIM 1 AIM 1: Improve mental health research capacity at UON by training faculty- Multidisciplinary AIM 2: Training postgraduates in mental health research- multidisciplinary and mentored Extending to health workers in decentralized sites in year 3 AIM 3: Establish a mental health research resource centre based at UON and supported by UON and UW faculty

Implementation method UON in collaboration with UW organised: 1. A two-week grant writing and research methods training workshop at UON- 1 st workshop February and 2 nd October 2. An ongoing face to face and online ( and Skype) research mentoring 3. Seed funding for conducting mental health research 4. Membership in an ongoing collaborative thematic research group

Mental health research support and resource centre A mental health resource centre has been set up at the department of Mental Health at KNH. 5 computers have been procured for the facility, internet, e-learning materials, books etc A fulltime research coordinator to run the centre- George Khamati A fulltime manager for the project is stationed at the centre- Anne Mbwayo

Summary We are offering Collaboration and Support in Mental health research- CHS and at decentralized sites Competencies in research methods Multidisciplinary/ trans-disciplinary Mentoring and Seed grants for PG students in MH research at CHS Mentoring and funding small research projects at the decentralized sites Collaboration in projects that have a psychosocial component Work with PRIME-K AIM 3 to support research in Mental health at the decentralized sites

Workshop goals and expectations Strengthening collaboration with Major stakeholders in mental health: Child health, Maternal Health and Non communicable Diseases Extend the relevance of research beyond the University settings to involve Health Workers in the counties- Decentralized PRIME-K sites Collect baseline data on Mental health priority Areas in Kenya- multisite study Each of the participants or groups- will leave this place on Saturday having written a sound proposal that can go to ethics
