“Campus Update” KGCS Equipment update proposal Annie Duff Addison Langford Jamie Wu Nathan Stanley

Updating Equipment Update the TV equipment on campus so as to provide better learning for students and also make a better product to put on air. Turn Southern TV station into a business. Functional Theory: using communication to promote sound reasoning, prevent errors and build productive relationships among members.

KGCS 22 Station…. Our news station is using equipment that is 20+ years old and rely totally on generous donations for any new equipment and software.

What is the problem?... The communications department is a publicly funded FCC licensed station that has no cable access. AND we must serve our community interests. … We cannot make money off of our stations through commercials and because of that we cannot be financed properly to get new equipment.

Interviews

Why is this so important?... It limits our competition to other schools in the area Students are talented with creative ideas but are unable to put them into production. We are missing an opportunity to collaborate with other majors at southern and making money off of a better project

Student Questionnaire

Our neighbors a PSU… Student produced cable TV station Publicly funded Editing consoles Complete radio laboratory with two audio boards Sends students to NABS State-of-the-art digital and audio production facility using Adobe Premier Pro JVC HD 250s cameras 16X9

Comparison with our neighbors at PSU

Northwestern University… A partial list of equipment available for students to check out includes: * Arriflex SR II Super 16mm, standard 16mm, and 16BL 16mm motion picture cameras, * Panasonic DVX-100 B, 24p mini DV cameras * Panasonic HVX-200 P, DV, and HD P2 cameras * Panasonic HDC27F P Varicam high-definition cameras * Multiple Mole Richardson, Arri Sun HMI, KinoFlo, and Lowell lighting packages, microphones, mixers, audio recorders, and other audio and camera support equipment Post-production suites include: * Avid HD /DS Nitris editing and high-end finishing suites * Avid XPress SDI nonlinear editing suites * Pro Tools Audio Editing Suites * Final Cut Pro 5.1 HD editing, graphics, and DVD authoring suites * 2-D and 3-D animation lab running Softimage XSI software * A multiformat conversion and dub room * A 60-seat theater with motion picture and high definition projection and 5.1 Dolby Pro Logic surround sound

KOMU… The only university owned commercial television Uses lab as a real life experience for students attending University of Missouri Lets take a quick look at the stations website…

Average life of our studio equipment… Digital still cameras… 3 years Digital video cameras… 3 years Wireless Microphone… 5 years Carts/Stands/Cabinets… 10 years Tripods… 5 years Laptops… 4 years Miscellaneous cables… 5 years Televisions… 6 years …We are out of date Information found at Media Tech by Penn State University

Solution… Turn the News station at Southern into a business Get rid of old system of only donations for funding and FCC and collaborate with bigger businesses for sponsors and commercial opportunities Start using commercials to bring in revenue to update our equipment. Get marketing and business students on board with the station, giving them more job opportunities to students on campus. Make more student led and different shows available on air so the station is more interesting. Cut programs and direct the flow of money to the TV station

How to make this happen… Functional Theory: using communication to promote sound reasoning, prevent errors and build productive relationships among members. Find sponsors Buy secondhand equipment from local news stations to cut cost Have a meeting with the news station director about change. Ensure the quality and content of the station is better perfected
