 Researched the feasibility of creating a sobriety checkpoint program in Anchorage, Alaska  Researched the statistics and costs of driving under the influence in Anchorage ◦ 5,888 DUIs in 2008 ◦ 22 fatal car accidents ◦ $130 billion dollars a year spent on alcohol related crashes

 Conducted secondary research on the effectiveness of sobriety checkpoints  Researched driving records through Alaska Division for Motor Vehicles  Distributed and studied a questionaire regarding the problem of alcohol in Anchorage

 Will the State of Alaska be able to fund this program?  Will this program decrease DUI’s?  Will this program decrease alcohol related accidents?

Affordability Each checkpoint would save up to $50,000 a year. For every dollar invested, six to 23 dollars is proven to be saved.

 The figure above shows that Alaskans support having a sobriety checkpoint program. When surveyed, 76% of respondents said that they would vote in favor for a sobriety checkpoint program in Anchorage, Alaska.

Lower DUIs  Checkpoints deter people from drinking and driving because their location is viewable by the public  Checkpoints are proven to lower DUIs by 20 percent

Lower alcohol related accidents They effectively lower the number of alcohol related accidents. Sobriety checkpoints can cut the number of alcohol-related accidents by up to 20 percent.

 The State of Alaska would benefit from a sobriety checkpoint program.  The program would be affordable.  The program would lower DUI citations  Alcohol related accidents will decrease.  Other States have used and benefited from this program.  Other States have saved money.  The streets of Anchorage would be safer.
