SIOBHAN GERBER DATE:8 AUGUST 2014

From the beginning…  Reading and writing was something I always enjoyed for as long as I can remember. Whether I was reading to myself or having a story to me, I had the ability to create the scenes in my head. From a young age my favourite fairy-tale is The little mermaid.

Years later…  Although I was never one to be fully engrossed in books round my early teens. I read the odd book, but got involved in a really dorky comic book called Archie. Though I believe this was the start to my love of reading.

High School years…  As high school came along, we were all forced to read prescribed books which included Shakespeare.  But with high school came my love for literature and history. The two things I became very excited about which I exceeded by my matric year. Books became my escape.

Matric and the year after…

Application…  Though what a mission that was itself. After deciding what my future will be I applied early in march. But waited and waited for months eventually finding out myself and finally accepted into The University of Pretoria.

My inspiration…  Although books were not the only factors contributing to my decision but it was found in movies, three in particular. These were the Devil wears Prada and How to loose a guy in 10 days. The last but most influential is Julie and Julia. Watching scenes of food and an insight of the publisher of Julia Childs cook book, created a spark to make my decision. The idea of also working for a magazine that includes stories as well as creativity highly intrigues me. The idea of reading for a living can only be THE BEST job for me. I love you learn about new things and stories are the only way to do so. One thing for definite is that I always knew is that I want to work in a fun, creative workplace.

My inspiration 2.0  Magazines are not my only interest, it is Food and baking.my love for food and baking was stimulated from my early teens from my mom. She did a course in food and of course knew how to cook. This got me interested and I started learning from a young age. And with that every weekend there were either biscuits being baked or cake. This had spiked my interest and it has only grown with age. My dream is create my own baking and cook book with my secret recipes to be shared to all. Publishing can help me achieve this as well as work closely with cook writers and publish their books. And better yet, I get to try each recipe to my liking.

Publishing- Now and the future… Now in my second semester, I am only but enjoying my course even more. This semester I have my first publishing module and I love it from the time It starts to the time the session ends. I never thought I would become a publisher. Truth be told, I always thought id become a vetinerian, Id been saying that since I was six but my love for words had pushed me into a completely different direction. My goals of course is to continue my love for books and excel in life in something I love to do. Literacy has had a big impact in my life, right from the time I read, The little Mermaid, still my favourite story to this day.
