The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th Scope of the agreement  Publishers Program  Libraries Program. Google has been scanning into its search database millions of books provided by major research libraries of the USA, Europe and Asia: USA: Harvard, California, Stanford, Michigan, New York Public Library… Europe: Oxford, Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, Ghent University Library, Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire de Lausanne, Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon. In Spain, Biblioteca de Cataluña and the Biblioteca de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid Asia: Keio University Library, Japan In September of 2006 the Complutense University of Madrid and Google signed a partnership agreement primarily focused on the large-scale digitization of the library’s public domain

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th What is Google doing? Google digitizes our books in the public domain and assumes the costs of the scanning. Google shows the full text of those books in Google Books. Google creates an interface for each partner (Complutense, Harvard, etc.) to access to their digitized books.

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th What is the Complutense Library doing? The Complutense Library is providing its resources and technical staff. The library staff select the material and organize the logistic to ensure the books safety.

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th Benefits of the agreement for the Complutense Library  Mass digitization of our bibliographic heritage, enlarging the number of the potential readers.  Improvement in the conservation and preservation of original books.  Strategic partnership with some of the world’s major libraries and alliance with the world’s leading information company.

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th Aims of the mass digitization project  Offering access to the University’s library heritage and contribute to its dissemination, access and preservation.  Increase in the use of the Catalogue.  Sharing our books stock with the society.  To complete the cataloguing of rare books and those of the 19th century yet to be processed.  Establish a conservation and restoration plan for damaged books. AND…  “Selling” the Spanish language abroad.

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th Planning and designing of the digitization project  Analysis of Complutense collections. 32 libraries involved.  Situation reports: buildings, facilities, repositories accesses, etc.  Cataloging plan: during 2007 and 2008 were catalogued books.  Selection criteria guide: fixed criteria (publication year) and criteria depending on the physical condition of the books.  Binding the books from the 19th Century. Recommendations guide.  Digitization program: workflows and logistic operations.

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th Technological applications  Web application to carry out the internal management process of the digitization: It shows updated and accurate information online and in real time on all the processes involved in the digitization, with statistical data of the operations. This application stores the metadata of the books included in the digitization project.

The partnership agreement between the Complutense University and Google Books. Manuela Palafox. London, 2009 October 29th Technological applications  PDA The selection team uses this device to store the physical conditions of the books according to our selection criteria. Firstly a book’s barcode is read Subsequently a form is presented on the screen in which the librarian notes a series of points regarding the book’s state of conservation Then, the librarian exports that information to the Web Management System and later it is exported to the library Catalog.
