1 Online resources in TCD Library:
Online resources in TCD Library: Databases and E-Books (an introduction) Michaelmas Term 2013 Trinity College Library Dublin 1

2 Online resources in TCD Library
What are Databases? Where do I find them? How do I find E-Books? What if I’m off campus? Here’s the online reference, where’s the full text? *Look for these icons: What’s TARA? What’s the Research Support System? Emphasise: Access on and off campus (need an internet connection) Off campus, you MUST go through the TCD Library catalogue, so that your College username and network login password are authenticated and you are recognised as being a ‘TCD-affiliated’ user. *Link resolver – this appears in the form of an icon (within databases, a small blue square with TCD written in black text, or in Stella Search, a teal square with TCD in white text), helps move between databases – it appears on bibliographic database search results and connects to full text, if available, or to details of Library’s paper (i.e. the physical book or journal) copy in the TCD catalogue. Trinity College Library Dublin

3 What are Databases? Large amounts of indexed, organised and searchable data. Coming from many different types of provider, they have differing technical capabilities. You can usually save, bookmark, download, print and material from databases. Many are free, but TCD Library purchases access to over 350 important databases. TCD pays to access 350+ specialist databases. Trinity College Library Dublin

4 What else? Databases can be collections or websites determined by:

These are web pages set up by Subject Librarians. They will guide you towards the most useful resources in your field of study. Trinity College Library Dublin 6

7 How to search for a named database
Search for this discipline-specific database: Engineering Village 2 Start at the Library home page, Go directly to the Stella Search box, either under the TCD crest or the first option under Search Collections, and type Engineering Village 2, OR In Search Collections go to Databases & E-Books, OR In Support & Training go to Subject Guides. Follow the links to the catalogue record which, in turn, links to the resource. Those wishing to carry out an ‘in depth’ search will need to go directly to a particular discipline-specific database There are several routes to finding a named database. 2013 NOTE: Subject search list won’t work after the 2013 upgrade. This slide: Start: Library home page : If you know the title of the database In Search Collections, go to Databases & E-Books > A-Z by database name [Databases & E-Books -by Subject – databases ordered by subject areas; In Search Collections go to Databases & E-Books > by Subject and look under Civil Engineering] *This list won’t work after the 2013 upgrade. Otherwise go to Subject Guides, under Support & Training section You can also Go directly to the Stella Search box, under the TCD crest and type Engineering Village 2, (a Stella search by default) Result for each: the catalogue record which links to the resource. Each route finds a catalogue record which provides a link to the resource. Trinity College Library Dublin 7

8 What are E-books? E-Books can be digitized versions of printed books, or digital works which adopt a book-like format on screen. An E-Book of an important current book is often not the latest edition of a work. Check the catalogue. E-Books can be collected together into packages according to Subject Historical period Reference an E-book provider platform (all subjects) E-book editions of a textbook are generally released later than the print version by the publisher. Therefore the most recent edition of a book may only be available in print. This is important to know for people studying areas where there are frequent updates of core texts. Check dates in catalogue carefully As with databases, e-books can be collections dealing with a particular subject, e.g. Chemistry or Nursing, or can cover a period of time – as in the EEBO and ECCO collections – the Early and Eighteenth Century collections of books, over 300,000 of them. They can be reference works or can be gathered together according to publisher, e.g. Royal Society of Chemistry or provider, e.g. MyiLibrary. E-books collections are listed with our databases. Most e-book single titles can be found by searching the catalogue. Trinity College Library Dublin

9 Finding the Library’s E-books?
E-Book collections are listed with our databases under Databases and E-books on the Library’s home page. Most E-Book single titles, within those collections, can be found by searching the catalogue. A small percentage of E-Books in our collections can only be found by searching the provider or publisher’s database or platform. A small number of e-books in our collections can only be found by searching the provider or publisher’s database or platform. Several reasons for this, the catalogue records, supplied by the publisher or by OCLC haven’t yet been made available, or haven’t been created, or haven’t yet been loaded. It is important to double check by searching a publisher or provider platform. For example, OECD iLibrary E-Books. Note: TCD E-Books are available via desktop computers and laptops. 11 Found a reference, where’s the full text?
You’ve done a search, found a reference … However, there’s no full text link button: Find and click the “link resolver” button (may show the text: “Check TCD e-journals”) This links to a piece of software which checks if the Library has the article you want, either in another database or in hard copy, anywhere in the Library’s collections. Searching within a specific database, Engineering Village 2 Note that Engineering Village provides access to two engineering and applied sciences databases (Compendex and Inspec). The Link resolver appears beside the article details and links to full text in other subscribed databases, if available, or to details of Library’s print copy. Trinity College Library Dublin 11

12 Link resolver (Linksource) menu
Clicking on the TCD icon searches the TCD Library e-journals’ collections and the full Library catalogue, for both electronic and hard copy forms of the required title. This is the link resolver menu. A number of options are presented: If the Library subscribes to the electronic version of the required journal, a link will appear. (This link may take you directly to the article or you may have to browse the table of contents of the issue to locate the article). 2) If the Library does not subscribe to the electronic version, select the link to the catalogue, and a search of the journals we hold in print will be carried out. If we subscribe to the print version, a record providing information on where the journal is located will appear. 3) A link to the contact details of the subject librarians also appears on the menu. 13 Off Campus Access Off campus you need: An Internet connection College Username College Network Password Off campus access: steps needed to access the Library’s online resources: [Note: problems with usernames and passwords are handled by IS Services] Trinity College Library Dublin

14 Off Campus Access Off campus, you MUST go through the TCD Library Website or Stella Search to access licensed online resources. After you click TCD-affiliated users may click here for access, the system requests your College ID and password. If you do NOT go through the Library catalogue, you will NOT be recognised as being a member of TCD or ‘TCD-affiliated’ and will be denied access to the database or e-journal article. Off campus access If you are off campus you MUST go through the TCD Library Website, so that you can be authenticated by the system. Input your College username and network login password when requested (as you leave the catalogue record to link to the database). You will then be recognised by the database provider as a member of TCD or ‘TCD-affiliated’. The most common problem people encounter when they try to consult databases off campus is that they have not gone through the Library Website to get there. Off campus, if you can’t get through to a database you usually use, or if it is requesting a username and password and your College ones don’t work, make sure you have connected to it from the TCD Library Website. [Note to Presenter: Next slide shows the off campus access secure login screen] Trinity College Library Dublin
