Benefits of Drupal All editing can be done in a standard web browser. No special software needed. WYSIWYG features allow editors to create complex pages without knowing HTML. Theme system allows non-designers to build unique looking sites while complying with RIT web standards. Content changes can be tracked over time. 8/20/20154Drupal Web Content Management

Benefits of Drupal (continued) Modular, extensible system can support nearly any website’s needs. Drop-in ecommerce/event registration features. ITS maintains the software, applying patches and updates as necessary. 8/20/20155Drupal Web Content Management

Drupal at RIT Drupal will be an option for developers of “official” websites at RIT. Site owners have complete control of the look, feel, and functionality of their sites. Site owners manage who has access to their sites and to what degree. Access is controlled by RIT Computer Account. 8/20/20156Drupal Web Content Management

Drupal at RIT (Continued) Drupal runs in our existing web hosting environment. Drupal can be added “in parallel” to an existing site, allowing site owners/editors to move content into Drupal as time allows. 8/20/20157Drupal Web Content Management

User Roles Drupal has a robust user roles system for managing site access. RIT has defined a set of default user roles for sites in our environment: –Site administrator –Site developer –Content editor –Content creator –Authenticated user –Anonymous user 8/20/20158Drupal Web Content Management

Site Administrator Has full access to all features of the site. Can enable new modules, blocks, and themes. Can add PHP code to parts of the site to add functionality. Manages users and permissions and can create new roles as necessary. 8/20/20159Drupal Web Content Management

Site Developer Has all of the permissions of the site administrator except the user and role management fuctions. 8/20/201510Drupal Web Content Management

Content Editor Has access to create and edit content throughout the site. Does not have the ability to add additional functionality to the site or to manage users. 8/20/201511Drupal Web Content Management

Content Creator Can add new content to the site, but cannot publish it. Content added by content creators must be approved and published by a user with content editor or greater permissions. 8/20/201512Drupal Web Content Management

Authenticated User By default, anyone with an RIT Computer Account can log in to a site. Users who have not been added to a role receive authenticated user status. Authenticated users have very limited rights, such as the ability to contribute to discussions or post comments to news posts. They cannot modify content. 8/20/201513Drupal Web Content Management

Anonymous User The default user role, used when the user has not logged in to the site. Very limited permissions: can generally see content but not interact with it. Anonymous users can comment on items that allow comments, but their comments will require administrative approval before they are posted to the site.
