Copyright 2003, Christine L. Abela, M.Ed. Isn’t getting my degree enough? Sometimes getting your degree may be enough. However, ask yourself how many other students will be graduating with you who will have the same degree.

Jobs on campus or in the field Students who need a job or who want one while attending college should consider attaining a job that will help you hone skills that will later be used in your career. If you have to have a job, you might as well make it worth your time and effort!

Copyright 2003, Christine L. Abela, M.Ed. Technology The use of computers and technology is widespread and finding its way into virtually all professions. Therefore, attaining a job that will allow you to hone your computer skills might be something you want to consider. Most colleges and universities have computer labs and employ student workers to staff those labs.

Clubs and Organizations Clubs and organizations on college and university campuses may provide a way to gain experience and knowledge that you will use later in a career. In addition, some clubs and organizations are a great way to begin networking with people. (Remember the old saying, “it’s not what you know, but who you know”)

Practicums and internships are meant to give you “real world” experience in a profession. Practicum and internships are a good way to begin networking among established professionals in your field. Practicums and internships can lead to permanent jobs after graduation

Employers will be interested in hiring individuals who are knowledgeable about not only current, but also future trends. Listserves & message boards are good ways to keep up with what is happening “now” in your field.

While you are still working on your degree, you might be able to also work on gaining or honing some of those other qualifications.
