Feeling and Worries JackJack’s MumPaddy “I feel a bit annoyed: like why me?” “I was at the end of my tether. I didn’t know what to do.” “People say it happens to a lot of people, but I never really believed them.” “It worries me when I go away.” “I know Jack couldn’t help it but I would get very uptight about it.” “I stopped wetting the bed when I was about 11.” “I am worried about people finding out.” “I found it very difficult to cope with the stress.” “I don’t think I told anyone about it.” “My friends might laugh at me.” “I rang the ERIC helpline to get help and support.” “I did find out that one of my friends also wet the bed.”

 Wetting the bed affects Jack and Paddy in many ways:  Their feelings  Their lives  Their family life

Jack and Paddy are not alone, they have help from others:  Bedwetting can happen to children of all ages. It is more common in young children, although some teenagers (between one in 50 and one in 100) still wet the bed  Both boys and girls can wet the bed  It is hard for most people to talk about bedwetting, so children who wet the bed often feel alone and bad about it  Some children who wet miss out on things such as trips and staying over at their friend’s houses. Some of them might be bullied at school  If they wet the bed, it’s not their fault  There are three main reasons why children wet the bed:  They can’t wake up at night when they need to go to the toilet  Some children carry on making a lot of urine (wee) at night and it is too much to hold onto until morning  For some children, their bladder (the place where wee is stored until we go to the toilet) can only hold small amounts and gets rid of the wee before it is full up.

Jack and Paddy are not alone, they could: - place a tick next to the right advice Have at least 6 to 8 drinks of water or water-based drinks (e.g. squash) every day If you need to wee, always wait until break time Go to the toilet at night if you feel like having a wee Drinking water or squash is best if you are thirsty Have a small drink before going to bed Fizzy drinks are best when you are thirsty Try to do some exercise every day Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables Go to the toilet for a wee before you go to bed Drink a lot before going to bed During the day, go to the toilet when you need to
