ABOUT CROATIA  It is situated in South-East Europe at the crossroads of the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain  Croatia borders with Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Italy  Population of the country is 4.28 million people  Along the Croatian Adriatic coast there are more than a thousand islands  National anthem is „Lijepa naša domovino” (”Our Beautiful Homeland”)  Croatia became independant from Yugoslavia in 1991

CAPITAL CITY - Zagreb  Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia  It’s the biggest city in Croatia  Many famous scientists, artists and athletes come from the city or work in it  It is also a business, academic, cultural, artistic and sporting centre of Croatia  Zagreb is a city of green parks and walks with many places to visit in the beautiful surroundings

CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL HERITAGE  The Croatian people have been inhabiting the area for fourteen centuries  It has been a crossroad of influences of the western and the eastern culture (since division of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire)  The 19th-century period was crucial in the emancipation of the Croatian language

FOOD AND MUSIC  Every part of Croatia has its own culinary tradition  In the middle of Croatia you can see the impact of Austro-Hungarian and Turkish cuisine but along the Adriatic coast there’s a strong influence of Italian and French cuisine  Continental cuisine has more complex way of preparation and much more nutritious meals and groceries (meat, vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy products and eggs)  Coastal cuisine is primarily based on fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables and olive oil
