FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION(FAO)

WHAT IS IT? It leads international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet to negotiate agreements and debate. This organisation helps developing countries and improves agriculture, forestry and fisheries, also it ensures good nutrition.

HISTORY The international organization for food and agriculture emerged in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Second war world effectively ended the International Agricultural Institute, because it was only officially dissolved by resolution of its Permanent Committee. Its functions were then transferred to the recently established FAO.

BUDGET It is funded by its members. The voluntary contributions provided by members and other partners, support mechanical and emergency assistance to governments for clearly defined purposes.

THE SEVEN DEPARTMENTS OF FAO Administration and Finance. Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Economic and Social Development. Fisheries and Aquaculture. Forestry. Natural Resource Management and Environment. Technical Cooperation.

STRUCTURE AND FINANCE FAO was established on 16 October 1945,in Canada. The agency meets every two years to review the work carried out by the organization and to approve a Programme of Work and Budget for the next two-year period. The Conference elects a council of 49 member states that acts as an interim governing body, and the Director- General, that heads the agency.

AGRICULTURE FAO created the International Plant Protection Convention in This international treaty organization works to prevent the international spread of pests and plant diseases.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT It describes company activities that provide the local community with opportunities to develop. While some activities may be part of the company’s core business, others may be additional activities that enhance the company’s reputation and its relationship with the community.

FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE It promotes the development of the province’s fishing and aquaculture industries. The Provincial Government works with industry and other partners to ensure the fishery is economically viable. The objective is to optimize the value of the fishery for all participants and for the province.

FORESTRY It helps nations manage their forests in a sustainable way. The Organization's approach balances social, economic and environmental objectives.
