The Arts of Latin American Curriculum Action Plan

For vocal, instrumental and visual arts to collaborate, in the months of November and December, to provide students in grade 4 with a well rounded introduction to the Arts of Latin America. To meet the standards set forth by the Maine State Learning Results - Explain that visual and performing arts help to understand history and world cultures. - Compare products of visual and performing arts

In early November, students will be introduced to the traditional instruments and music of the Andean cultures in vocal music class (MLR – A3, B1, E1).

Mid-November, students will be introduced to the music and instruments of the Mariachi (MLR – A3, B1, E1). Throughout November, students will work on the traditional dance La Raspa, also known as The Mexican Hat Dance (MLR – D1, E1, E4, E5).

Children will sing traditional songs of Mexico and other Latin American countries. Songs for December Nochebuena – from Mexico, sung for Christmas Eve La Piñata – from Mexico sung during special celebrations Songs for December Nochebuena – from Mexico, sung for Christmas Eve La Piñata – from Mexico sung during special celebrations And learn Latin American songs that represent various Holidays and celebrations (MLR – A1, A2, A3, B1, E1, E5).. Songs for November El Chocolate – from Mexico and Central America El Burrito Enfermo – from all over Latin America Songs for November El Chocolate – from Mexico and Central America El Burrito Enfermo – from all over Latin America

In December, students will learn how to play the Ocarina, a traditional instrument found in the Andes Region of Latin America (MLR – A1, A3, D1, E3, E5). Band students will learn traditional Latin American songs on their instruments throughout November and December.

In November, students will be introduced to traditional pottery and art of Mexico and the Andes Region in Art (MLR – A1, A2, A3, D1, E1, E2,).

In mid-November, students will make four-hole ocarinas, a traditional Latin American instrument (MLR – B1, B2, E5).

Students will learn paper mâché technique and create traditional piñatas in December (MLR – B1, B2, E5).
