 After going to lockers, be in your seats by 7:50 am, ready to begin, quiet and working on completing the morning activity posted for the appropriate day.  Monday: Studying for Chapter 4 Final Spelling and Vocabulary Test on Friday; make flash cards if desired; no partners  Tuesday: Free Novel Reading (be sure to have either a novel from Miss Mendoza’s class or a book of your own)  Wednesday: SUDOKU  Thursday: Last Day to work on Chapter 4 Vocabulary Packet; study spelling and vocabulary, finish working on yesterday’s art  Friday: Study Day

 Monday: Ticket to Class: Answer the following questions  1. In a skating race, Rosa won one event with a time of seconds. She won a second event with a time of seconds. What was her combined time for the 2 events?  2. Marcella ran the 400-meter race in 48.7 seconds. Julie ran it in 50 seconds. Who was faster? By how much?  3. Dues for the Great Falls Hiking Club were $ per year. 15 members belong and have paid dues. How much money has been collected?  Workbook H1-11

Sixth Grade Math

 To translate word phrases into algebraic expressions.  Why? To master another aspect of Algebra and Functions in 6 th grade math (and beyond). Being able to write expressions is a key component in Algebra and other higher math when solving any kind of word problem.

AF 1.2: Evaluate an algebraic expression for a given situation, using up to three variables. AF 1.3: Apply algebraic order of operations and the commutative, associative, … properties to evaluate expressions… MR 3.0: Move beyond a particular problem by generalizing to other situations.

Chart of terms for the 4 operations. \ * Order matters in the set-up of each expression; VERY important! Remember about parentheses: 6 times the sum of y and 1 = 6 x (y + 1) or 6(y + 1) SumDifference*ProductQuotient* AddSubtractMultiplyDivide The result of adding numbers The result of subtracting numbers The result of multiplying numbers The result of dividing numbers Numerical Expression: 4+7 Variable Expression: 3 + x 20 – 5 11 – y 2 x 9 6t 18 ÷ 2 8/a AndLess thanIn all ( with same amounts repeated) Evenly shared In allSplit among AltogetherGave each

1) Read the statement and understand what you are being asked to do. 2) Look for the key words to translate into operations (+, -, x, ÷). 3) Look for “is” to translate to =. 4) Parentheses are used to arrange in a certain order. 5) Write out your expression or equation and check your work. A) A sum of a number and 3. = x + 3 B) 37 increased by 5 = C) 10 times a number = 10 x n or 10n or 10 ‧n D) 2 less than a number = n – 2 E) A quantity more than 10 = 10 + x

Write each phrase as an expression 1) 6 less than k 2) t divided by 8 3) m and 3 more 4) Alex raked 5 bags. Adam raked an x amount. How many bags were raked in all? 1) k – 6 2) t ÷ 8 3) m + 3 4) r + 5

 You can now translate word phrases into algebraic expressions. Why? You have now mastered another aspect of Algebra and Functions in 6 th grade math (and beyond). Being able to write expressions is a key component in Algebra and other higher math when solving any kind of word problem. You can translate word phrases into mathematical expressions using numbers, symbols, and letters.
