FRIDAY’S WARM-UP The Senior class has 21 girls and 29 boys. What percent of the class are boys? What percent of the class are girls?

Unit 5 Vocab Words Associative Property of Addition – The sum of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) Associative Property of Multiplication – The product of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. (a x b) x c = a x (b x c) Commutative Property of Addition – The sum of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged. a + b = b + a Commutative Property of Multiplication – The product of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged. a x b = b x a

Unit 5 Vocab Words Distributive Property – The sum of two addends multiplied by a number is the sum of the product of each addend and the number. a x (b + c) = (a x b) + (a x c) Exponent – The number of times a number or expression (called the base) is used as a factor of repeated multiplication. Also called the “power” Order of Operations – The rules to be followed when simplifying expressions. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply and Divide, Add and Subtract.

7.1 EXPONENTS Sometimes it is necessary to multiply a number by itself one or more times. For example, a math problem may require multiplying 3 x 3 or 5 x 5 x 5 x 5. In these situations, instead of writing 3 x 3, you can write 3², or instead of writing 5 x 5 x 5 x 5, 5⁴ means the same thing. The first number is the base. The small, raised number is called the exponent or power. The exponent tells how many times the base should be multiplied by itself. Example: 6³ 6 x 6 x 6 (6 x 6 = 36 x 6 = 216) *Any number raised to the exponent of 1 equals the base number. Example: 4¹ = 4 10¹ = 10 25¹ = 25 *Any number raised to the exponent of 0 equals 1. Example: 4ᴼ = 1 10ᴼ = 1 25ᴼ = 1

7.1 EXPONENTS

7.2 Evaluate Expressions with Exponents When solving an expression that includes an exponent, first find the exponential product. Then solve by following the mathematical signs in the problem. Example 7: Solve: 4² + 9 Example 8: Solve: 2 x 3³

7.3 Basic Properties Associative Property of Addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) The sum of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. Associative Property of Multiplication (a x b) x c = a x (b x c) The product of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. Commutative Property of Addition a + b = b + a The sum of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged. Commutative Property of Multiplication a x b = b x a The product of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged.

7.3 Basic Properties Distributive Property a x (b + c) = (a x b) + (a x c) The sum of two addends multiplied by a number is the sum of the product of each addend and the number. Identity Property of Addition 0 + a = a Identity Property of Multiplication 1 x a = a Inverse Property of Addition a + (-a) = 0 Inverse Property of Multiplication

7.5 Order of Operations (pg. 94) In long Math problems with +, -, x, ÷, (), and exponents in them, you have to know what to do first. Without following the same rules, you could get different answers. “P”lease (Parenthesis) “E”xcuse (Exponents) “M”y “D”ear (Multiply / Divide) “A”unt “S”ally (Add/Subtract) EXAMPLE: 24 ÷ 3 (5 – 3) + 2² - 5

When a problem has a fraction bar, solve the top of the fraction (numerator) and the bottom of the fraction (denominator) separately using the rules for order of operations. (P.E.M.D.A.S) You treat the top and bottom as if they were separate problems. Then simplify the fraction to lowest terms. “P”lease (Parenthesis) “E”xcuse (Exponents) “M”y “D”ear (Multiply / Divide) “A”unt “S”ally (Add/Subtract) EXAMPLE: 3 (7 – 5) – 2 4² - 2 (3 + 1)
