Ethnicity and Race

Ethnicity relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs. Race relates to a person's appearance: BIOLOGICAL: genetic traits such as SKIN COLOR, eye color, hair color, bone/jaw structure, etc.

Relates to a set of norms that people CREATE to DEFINE their group through ACTUAL or PERCEIVED shared cultural traits: Language Religion Nationality Debated term because ethnicity is expressed in so many different ways. WHAT’S YOUR ETHNICITY?

Territory is often used as a unifying trait. Latin Americans in Latin America. Venezuelans in Venezuela. French in France. English in England. Koreans in Korean peninsula. Japanese in Japan. What traits bind these groups of people together?

Over 90% of the world’s countries contain more than one ethnicity. All countries share borders with people of foreign ethnicities. Many cohesive ethnic groups have been artificially divided by political boundaries.

White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. Black or African American – A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. American Indian or Alaska Native – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment. Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. The 1997 OMB standards permit the reporting of more than one race.

An area within a city containing members of the same ethnic background. Can be clearly seen in the United States because of chain migration. “Chinatowns” in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.

A segregated ethnic area within a city. Locations tend to be some of the least desirable within the city.

South Africa’s old system of government where race was used to separate people within its territory. Segregation enforced through legislation by National Party ( ).

The systematic attempt to remove all people of a particular ethnicity from a country or region either by forced migration or coercion. Examples: Former Yugoslavia (Croatia and Bosnia) 1990s Indian Removal Act of 1830 by Andrew Jackson Nomadic Roma people in several European Countries

A premeditated effort to kill everyone from a particular ethnic group. Examples: Aborigines in Tasmania Nazi Germany and occupied Europe Rwanda: Hutu and Tutsi conflict Darfur conflict

Multicultural- having to do with many cultures. No longer a clear ethnic majority. The relative openness of the U.S. borders during the 1990s, combined with economic globalization, has literally changed the face of America. The American population increasingly looks like a representative sample of the world’s diverse population.

People who come from a common ethnic background but who live in different regions outside of the home of their city. Often used to refer to Jews or to Blacks from African descent.
