Leadership Structure  College & Career Leadership Position  College & Career Readiness Director brings in community support and pathway partners as well as assist students with making informed pathway decisions Advisory Committee Committee composed of teachers, building administrators, business partners, and CCR leadership to shape curriculum, and to determine pathway planning and focus. CCR Committee Composed of district leadership, building leaders, CCR leadership, school board members and CTE teachers who determine the mission and vision of the initiative.

SHCSC College & Career Readiness Initiative - Goals Our goal is to ensure all SHCSC students are exposed to a wide range of post-secondary opportunities to make informed decisions about post-secondary goals. Our goal is to ensure all SHCSC graduates leave high school accepted to an educational program or employment opportunity.

Pathways  Guide students to specific career clusters or careers.  Aligned sequence of academic courses taken in high school that allow students to be best prepared for post-secondary opportunities.  SHCSC pathways will be designed to allow students to earn a Gen. Ed. 30 certificate, Associates Degree, industry-recognized credentials, or technical certification.

College & Career Class Preparing for College and Career (PCC) – career class. For the 2015/16 School year, all 8 th and 9 th grade students will take PCC. Starting with the 2016/17 school year, it will be an 8 th grade only class.  A class designed to give students an informal introduction to the pathway concept.  During this course, students will begin a structured exploration process that culminates with their selection of a career pathway.  Off-campus exploration trips to college campuses and local companies will be utilized as well as on-campus visitor presentations.

College & Career Class Career Information and Exploration (CIE) – career class. For the 2016/17 School year, all 10 th grade students will take CIE. A class designed to give students a more in-dept study of career clusters and pathways.  Students will review their selected pathway and make changes as necessary.  Start preparing for post-secondary next steps.

Naviance A comprehensive college and career readiness platform for middle and high schools that help align individual student strengths and interests to support post-secondary success. Allow for personalized success planning for all students. Tools Learning style inventories Career interest profiler Goal-setting Four-year graduation planning Career exploration College exploration Curriculum lessons

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) National program that develops curriculum to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. Currently offer three high school PLTW courses. Expand the PLTW curriculum to junior high students. All 7 th grade students exposed to STEM pathway via 9-week gateway engineering exploration and 9-week biomedical detective complementary courses.

Pathway Partnerships SHCSC is in the process of building partnerships with local businesses and community groups interested in supporting specific pathways. To fully expose our future graduates to careers of their choice while in our corporation, we are committed to make each student’s career exploration as authentic as possible. Authentic experiences in specific industries (in the field) will drive relevant connections to concepts covered in the classroom

Partnership Commitments Local businesses and community groups can support our College & Career Pathways at various levels of commitment. Some examples include: Hosting internships, job shadowing or Co-op students Guest speaking engagements in career courses Hosting worksite tours Hosting teacher externships Mentorships Co-teaching collaboration in pathway courses Serving on pathway advisory committees

Dual Credits  Students can earn an Associates Degree or General Ed. 30 certificate  Dual credit courses allow qualifying students to earn college credits and high school credits at the same time.  Students/parents do NOT pay for dual credit tuition costs or books (supported by Harrison County Community Foundation).

Advanced Placement (AP) What are AP classes?  Is a program in the United States and Canada which offers college-level curricula and exams to high school students.  Students earning a score of 3 or higher on the end of course exam, can potentially earn college credit or waive college courses in that discipline. Goals  Increase the number of AP offerings.  Increase the number of students earning a score of a 3 or higher (out of 5).  Increase the rigor of the AP curriculum.

Exploration Trips  Off-campus exploration trips  Allow all 8th and 9th grade South Harrison students to visit a combination of college campuses and local companies.  Goal for 2015/16-Every students in the PCC class to visit two college campuses and two local companies for the 2015/16 school year.  Expand the program to include exploration trips for 10th – 12th grade

Counselor Role Help students create four year graduation plan. Facilitate college and career discussion using Naviance data. Bi-annual Advisement Counselors meet with students twice annually to update College & Career plan and monitor progress on pathway - one meeting to be held with parent/student via in-person or phone. Work to increase student awareness of post-secondary opportunities. Organize college visits Organize company visits Hold career fair and promote attendance at other college/career fairs Arrange industry guest speakers Arrange college rep visits Responsible to assure all students are accepted to a post-secondary opportunity.

Advisory Committee Made up of education, business, and government leaders Purpose:  To help improve student achievement by increasing relevancy of content  To develop a stronger workforce.  To promote economic development in the region  To serve in an advisory capacity to SHCSC academics.

Advisory Committee Upcoming Events  August 25 th - Rotary Presentation  CCR presentation to Rotary Club  August 28 th – Engage College & Career Breakfast  In conjunction with Harrison County Chamber of Commerce, we will host Engage College & Career Readiness to bring awareness and to start recruiting Advisory Committee members.  7:30 am-9:00 am, Community Foundation conference room.

College Career Center  Center created at South Central High School and Corydon Central High School.  A resource for students and community.  Students can use technology to access college and career information.  Community members can disseminate information to students about various opportunities such as mentoring, shadowing, volunteering, and employment recruitment.  Coordinate student internships and shadowing.  Staffed by full-time secretary.  Director will oversee the centers.

Work Ethic Certificate SHCSC will work with community partners to develop a Work Ethic Certificate to promote the “soft skills” that are so crucial to employers The SHCSC Work Ethic Certificate will emphasize such vital skills as: attendance, punctuality, responsibility, time management, and professionalism that will give our students a head start to success in the workplace. SHCSC students earning the Work Ethic Certificate will receive special recognition and awards in conjunction with pathway partners.
