February APRIL 2010 Short-Term Disability  Works with other income benefits (e.g. Social Security, Workers’ Comp*, State Retirement) to replace 60% of Benefit Salary up to $800 per week  *(Worker’s Comp pays out first before STD)  Waiting period before approved benefits begin depends on level of coverage selected:  30 day wait or 7 day wait

February APRIL 2010 Short-Term Disability  Maximum benefit period depends on the level of coverage selected:  30 day wait  7 day wait  Employees may choose to use sick leave or receive the benefits  NOTE: Georgia Military College allows employees to use sick leave during their waiting period, and then transition onto Short Term Disability once their wait period has expired. If there is not enough sick leave accumulated to use during their waiting period, the employee will go on leave without pay the day the leave begins, or at the time sick leave expires. Employees receiving short term disability pay will be on leave status with the college.

February APRIL 2010 Short-Term Disability Late Entrant  A current employee choosing STD coverage for the first time or re-enrolling after discontinuing coverage is considered a late entrant, unless a disability is caused by an accidental injury  Benefits for STD late entrants who become disabled due to Physical Disease, Pregnancy, or Mental Disorder during the 12-month period after the effective date will not be eligible to receive STD until after they have been disabled for 60 days

February APRIL 2010 Short-Term Disability/Pre-existing Conditions  Short-Term Disability benefits will not be payable for a disability resulting from a pre ‑ existing condition unless the employee has been covered under the Short-Term disability plan for twelve (12) consecutive calendar months

After 61, benefits are received on an Age Graded schedule  Coordinate with Social Security Normal Retirement Age  No change on current employee claims; only claims initiated on or after January 1, 2013

February APRIL 2010 Disability Reminders  Medical Underwriting is not required for: Short-Term Disability Long-Term Disability (if an employee selects coverage, when first eligible)  Long-Term Disability conversion is available for employees who terminate for reasons other than retirement from State service
