Appositives and the Pyramids TN Language Arts Checks for Understanding

What is an appositive? An appositive is extra information in the sentence that renames or gives further information about the noun it follows. Appositives are placed inside commas. Mary, my aunt from Chicago, is visiting us. The best part of our vacation was the visit to the Golden Gate Bridge, a structure that four years to complete.

Why appositives? Appositives are great ways to combine sentences and add interest to your writing. Uncle Henry lives in Ohio. Uncle Henry is a reporter for a national news network. Combined: Uncle Henry, a reporter for a national news network, lives in Ohio.

Give it a try. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have a new dog. They are our neighbors. The house looks haunted and lonely. The house once was home to a family of thirteen.

They pyramids are stone tombs for Egypt’s kings. The kings of Egypt were called Pharaohs.

The Great Pyramid is over 140 meters high and took 20 years to build. The Great Pyramid is the largest of the pyramids.

The Sphinx stands in front of the Pyramids. It has the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh.

By examining artifacts in the tombs we can learn about the culture. Artifacts are objects found from a previous time period.

The Pyramids are filled with secrets. There are clues about what life and death were like in Ancient Egypt.
