Veronica Rascona Inventors Workshop Presentation

Personal Educational Experiences Experiences that contributed to my academic interests and success: Early Years: Sewing PACE Provided interaction with other kids at the same academic level as me and expanded my knowledge at an early age. High school years: Being in honors classes Involvement in extracurriculars Taught me how to effectively balance my time and about being part of a team. College years: Studying abroad Taught me the value of being able to do something on my own. Reaffirmed my choice of major. Jewelry making Being a part of the Honors program ARS 101

College Expectations ASU I chose ASU because I was unsure of what I wanted to do and was offered a scholarship here. Hopes: To find a subject that really interested me and to make a more informed decision between wanting to study science or the arts. Fulfilled/Unfulfilled? I eventually found what interests me, but I didn’t get to try out the specific science I was most interested in (marine biology). Now, in the path I did choose, there are no opportunities at ASU for me to learn about the career path I wish to follow.

Opportunities Offered by the IW How could an Inventors Workshop have played a role in any of these experiences? It could have given me the opportunity to explore my interest in marine biology while still following my interest in the arts. Or, it simply could expand my knowledge within the arts in relation to conservation. How might an IW or IW network leverage these types of experiences for others? Could bring information and perhaps tools to people who have interests in areas of study that are rare or unavailable in their location.

Life-time Goals Looking to my career future, my goals are very vague. Right now I just want to do something that is personally fulfilling and I hope to contribute to my field, whatever that ends up being.

IW Project If there was an Inventors Workshop where you could ask any question or conduct any project and get as much support as you needed to answer or do it what would your question or project be: To get a firm background in what goes into house flipping and about the housing market and then to actually flip a house. Resources: Money Group to work with A house… Timeframe: At least a year preparation and at least six months for the flip alone.

My Project Cont. My related skills: I don’t have any technical skills related to this project except an interest in doing it and eye for how to improve the appearance of a house. Interest: I’ve watched house flipping shows and while the process looks very stressful, I would like to feel the sense of accomplishment at the end of it. Attempts made and/or barriers encountered in addressing this challenge: I have not made any attempts to address the challenge because it is a huge project to undergo and I have no money to fund such a project.

Learning Objectives Top 1-3 learning objectives: Learn about the resources that go into house flipping (amount of time and money and what materials are needed). Gain knowledge about what aspects of a house make people want to purchase it. Just see if it really is something that I would be interested in. Evaluation: By a mentor who has knowledge of and ideally experience with the subject.

Important Aspects of the IW 5 most essential elements: Videos Introduction material Hands on opportunities (Instructables) Constant upkeep Evaluation of student for successful completion

Hands-on Activities Incorporating Instructables or physical workshops are the most important aspect of the IW as this is the element that makes it stand out from other programs/opportunities already in place. This method provides a different learning experience tailored to those students who are visual or tactile learners.

IW Objectives Short-term objectives: Building interest campus-wide and launching a club. Begin creation of modules. Long-term objectives: Creating a program at ASU and linking it to other colleges and universities. Opportunities/challenges Gives opportunities to get people involved in something outside their area of study. Proving that the IW is something that anyone get be involved it.

Launching the IW Key components: Continuing promotion of cross-disciplinary interest/involvement. Services and opportunities it should offer: Collaboration on the creation of modules. Producing informed mentors for the modules. Must foster a hands-on experience. How can it connect effectively with other clubs so as not to compete but to leverage mutual interests and ambitious agendas? Act as an opportunity for clubs work together and pool knowledge from different disciplines. (I.e. Though competitions that call upon any and all majors).
