Teaching Science as Inquiry NINTH EDITION Authur A. CarinJoel E. Bass

“Messing About in Science” A new vision for science teaching and learning. Rat and Mole Wind in the Willows The Elementary Science Study (ESS) adapted the idea of messing about in boats to express the spirit of fun in science. “…whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else…….. “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats”.

A way to teach so students can investigate their world  Ask a simple but thoughtful question about the world and engage students to answer it  Encourage students to connect their observations to prior knowledge to increase their personal knowledge  Teachers should facilitate learning instead of transferring stored knowledge into students heads

The text is attempting to mirror national reform. Name dropping…..  American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)  National Research Council  National Science Education Standards (NSES) Citations are in the text to help teachers become familiar with these standards.

Video Case Studies  Advance learning as a teacher  Learn from one another  Become aware of what other teachers are doing (ex. perspective and strategies)  Reflect on real problems science teachers deal with in a classroom environment  Increase content knowledge

 Homebound students  Online quizzes with scores ed to teacher  Links to relevant resources  A message board for meaningful discussions  Syllabus manager created by teacher with assignments Companion Website

Methods for Teaching Science as Inquiry  Incorporating Science Processes into Science Inquiry (observations, variables, etc.)  Teaching Science Through Inquiry  Designing Effective Lessons  Connecting Science With Other Subjects  Science for ALL Students  Educational Technology

Activities for Teaching Science as Inquiry  Using Activities for Inquiry  Physical Science  Life, Ecology, and Environmental Science  Earth and Space  Special Needs

Good Nuggets  Science Supplies, Equipment, and Materials from Community Resources  Where to find Living Things/ Make them Houses/Food Requirements  Science Education Periodicals  Professional Societies
