Bronze Golf Sculptures

Design Mode’s Stephen L. Mellinger has produced an extraordinary set of bronze sculptures based on the five most required shots in golf.  “Solid Impact” – The driver off the tee  “dead aim” – A mid-iron from the fairway  “Rough It” – Escaping from tall rough  “poof” – A greenside sand shot  “Make It” – The pendulum putting stroke These sculptures are life size to the club and ball. They are destined to become treasured centerpieces for Private Collectors, Corporations, Country Clubs and Tournament Champions. To advance and showcase each individual sculpture, please use the keyboard arrow key to move forward or backward. Press escape to exit.

Artist Profile Stephen L. Mellinger is a contemporary golf artist who has resided in Alaska for the past twenty-five years. Born in Lima, Peru and raised in America’s Mid-west, Stephen began a love affair with the sport of golf at an early age. A self-taught sculptor, he has blended his passion for art and golf into bronze images so precise that golf instructors have used the individual sculptures to teach proper mechanics and position. His work is the combination of capturing the essence of golf, the meticulous detail of a fine craftsman and his philosophy (almost a Zen) that golf and art is a reflection of life’s risk/reward. Use the arrow key to move forward or backward.

“Solid Impact” The essence of feeling 'impact' through every fiber of the players being, sensing the dominion of power, balance, and rhythm. This sculpture represents the most power and best technique to move the ball the fastest and farthest of any club in the bag, reflecting how it feels and looks to perfectly strike the ball, driving it directly down the target line. Creating this sculpture required special attention to how the entire body weight and rotation work together with precise balance and alignment to deliver and release the driver at the optimum speed and angle of attack into impact. Use the arrow key to move forward or backward.

“dead aim” The essence of how deep and specific the focus on the target can be. This piece can direct the viewer well into the follow through, since it represents a driving force that is released well through and beyond the impact with the ball. The technique shows the 'moments' of converging angles and acceleration factors to best strike and deliver the ball to the target as intended. As usual, special attention in this sculpture had to be given to striking the ball squarely and at the correct angle. Seeing and knowing the "snap" that the Tour players get with their irons on golf balls made this work possible. Watching John Daly pound his 5-iron may have helped me create this piece more than any other single thing. Use the arrow key to move forward or backward.

“Rough It” The essence of discovering the comfort in wisely engaging opportunity and possibility where disappointment and self-criticism come begging. Deep grass represents trouble, and this sculpture represents intelligently escaping not just the surrounding grass but the disappointment of having to deal with the condition. The comfort in this shot is about knowing what needs to be done to minimize the effects of misdirection, and to maximize the opportunity. Special attention in this work went beyond the technical mechanics, as creating this meant associating mostly with the grass and relating to the resistance and reactions to the violent blow of the club's entrance into the area. Use the arrow key to move forward or backward.

“poof” The essence of confidence, the confidence that the sand will move the ball as expected. This piece represents the low, forward hand position with the club head rotated open to determine and effect the compacting of sand. Special attention had to be focused on the heel of the club entering the sand first, igniting the formation of this initial impact "blast". Since the club never touches the ball, but obviously moves the ball, this shot is unlike no other. Use the arrow key to move forward or backward.

“Make It” The essence of how clear and clean "touch" can be. This sculpture represents or shows that the truest roll the putt can achieve from the slight topspin which carries the ball perfectly off the putter head, mostly 'floating' over the tips of the blades of grass as it begins to track its way to the hole. Special attention again had to be focused on the hands being just ahead of the impact area as they lead the putter through on the critical gradient, meeting the ball precisely on the equator. Use the arrow key to move forward or backward.
