Presentation transcript:

Objective A. Writing Percents as fractions. A percent has an understood denominator of 100. When converting from a percent, get rid of the percent symbol (%). Since its meaning is to divide by “100”, when converting to fractions, divide by “100” by placing a “100” in its denominator. Procedure: To convert a percent to a fraction Step 1: Rewrite the percent as a fraction with the percent in the numerator and “100” in the denominator. Step 2: Reduce the fraction to lowest terms. Example 1. Convert the following percents to fractions. a. 7% b. 48% c. 125% Solution: Your Turn Problem #1 Convert the following percents to fractions. 4% 24% 225% Answers:

Procedure: Converting a percent to a fraction if the percent is a mixed number Step 1: Rewrite mixed number as an improper fraction. Instead of dividing by 100, multiply by the reciprocal, 1/100. Step 2: Reduce and Multiply. Example 2. Convert the following percents to fractions. Solution: Your Turn Problem #2 Convert the following percents to fractions. Answers:

Procedure: Converting a percent to a fraction if the percent has a decimal Step 1: Rewrite the decimal as a fraction or mixed number. Step 2: Write the mixed number as an improper fraction and multiply by 1/100. Step 2: Reduce and Multiply. Example 3. Convert the following percents to fractions. Solution: Your Turn Problem #3 Convert the following percents to fractions. Answers:

Objective B. Writing percents as decimals. Converting a Percent to a Decimal Hint: When you remove the percent symbol (%), you must divide by “100.” Divide by “100” by using the shortcut of moving the decimal point two places to the left. If no decimal point appears, insert one to the right of the last digit; then move it two places to the left. Procedure: To convert a percent to a decimal Step 1: Rewrite without percent symbol. Move the decimal point two places to the left. Insert leading zeros if necessary. Example 4. Convert the following percents to decimals. Answers: Your Turn Problem #4 Convert the following percents to decimals. Answers:

Converting a Percent that Contains a Fraction to a Decimal If the percent contains a fraction, i.e. 7¾%, we need to convert the fractional part to a decimal. Since ¾ = 0.75, 7¾%=7.75%. Then we can convert the percent to a decimal by moving the decimal point two places to the left and dropping the percent symbol. Example 5. Convert the following percents to decimals.
