Photography = Capturing Light Best Light Sources and Directions Basics: Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Focal Length, White Balance Intro to Canon SLR: Modes, Exposure, Auto-Focus, Lenses, External Flash Post-Processing with Windows Live Photo Gallery Post-Processing with Photoshop

$700 Camera, Bad PictureiPhone Camera, Crisp Picture Taking a picture by an open window makes a bigger difference than an expensive camera!

Back Lit Dark foreground, bright background. Not good for people. Avoid. Front Lit Best for people. Lights subject. Side Lit Can cause harsh shadows.

1.Try to find good/interesting light 2.Keep the light source at your back (front lit subject) 3.Stay as still as possible 4.Try interesting angles

Finding the right balance between Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO… Each one has trade offs. ISO Sensitivity to Light Aperture How wide the lens opens Shutter Speed How long the lens is open

Wide Aperture, f/2.0 Lets in more light. Allows for faster shutter speed. Less shaky. Good for poor light. Blurry background (shallow depth of field). Small Aperture, f/22 Lets in less light. Requires slow shutter speed. More shaky. Good for bright light. Everything is in focus (deep depth of field).

Fast Shutter Speed, 1/60+ Lets in less light. Freezes action. Less blurry. Requires wide aperture or high ISO. Slow Shutter Speed, 2 sec Lets in more light. Motion is blurred. Longer than 1/50-ish requires tripod.

Low ISO, 400 and lower Low sensitivity. Requires slow shutter speed. Requires wide aperture. No noise. High ISO, 1600 and higher High sensitivity. Allows faster shutter speed. Allows low aperture. Noise, especially in dark spots.

Short Focal Length (Wide Angle), 18mm Zoomed out. Looks like fisheye. Straight lines curve at edges. Allows bigger aperture with kit lens. Shows more background. Deeper depth of field (less blurry bg) Long Focal Length (Telephoto), 55mm Zoomed in. Good for portraits because less distortion. Allows smaller aperture with kit lens. Shows less background. Shallow depth of field (more blurry bg)

1.Use wide aperture (as low of an f/number as possible, such as f/1.8). 2.Use longer focal length (zoomed in). 3.Keep subject as close to camera as possible. 4.Keep background as far from subject as possible.

Warm White Balance Whites look Orange Cool White Balance Whites look Blue I recommend leaving this on Auto and fix on the computer…

Also is EFS.

EF-S: Cameras are cheaper than $2000-ish. Have a smaller sensor. Crop what comes in the lens by 1.8. EF: Full frame. Cameras cost $ Big sensor. Professional. Get more in the image, effectively having a bigger picture and wider angle on EVERY focal length.
