SATs Week May 11th –May 15th

What are SATs? Statutory assessment tests A legal requirement All 11 year olds in England sit the tests They now measure a child’s attainment in English and Mathematics at the end of key stage 2. Until 2009 they also measured attainment in Science.

Administration The children work in the hall. A smaller group of children can be supported by the use of readers and applications for extra time. Attendance essential Teacher Assessment

How do we prepare? Mock SATs Continuous Assessment Booster Classes Focused Maths Lessons Focused Spelling Lessons Focused SPaG Lessons ‘Special Writing’ Books Homework Materials Assertive Mentoring Guided / Independent Reading

Explanation of Levels (The last year of levels!) Children develop at different levels but at the end of Year 6 the National Curriculum guidelines are as follows; Level 3c, b, a : Below the nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 4c, b, a The nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 5c, b, a Above the nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 6- key stage 3 expectation REMEMBER – ALL children are different.

What will be tested? Maths Mental Maths (20, 5, 10 and 15s questions) Maths Papers A (45 minutes – using and applying maths) Maths Paper B* (45 minutes – using and applying maths) * Paper B was previously a calculator paper English 4. Reading – 1 hour to read and answer questions based around 3-5 different texts Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar – 45 minutes Spelling – 20 sentences with a word missing Writing – No longer a ‘one off’ test within the SATs week. This is continuously assessed throughout the year.

A Typical Timetable SPaG test Monday 11th May 2014 Tuesday 12th May Wednesday 13th May Thursday 14th May Friday 15th May Reading Test 1 hour SPaG test Spelling, punctuation and grammar (45mins) Spelling test (15 mins) Mental Maths Test 20 minutes Maths Test B 45 minutes *Level 6 Reading *Level 6 SPaG Maths Test A 45 minutes *Level 6 Maths A *Level 6 Maths B *Level 6 – Only children who are performing well above Level 5 selected children will sit the Level 6 papers. This will be a small number within our school and a small % nationally.

(previously Paper B allowed the use of a calculator) Maths Tests There are three tests: The mental test (20%) Paper A -no calculator allowed (40%) Paper B – no calculator allowed (40%) (previously Paper B allowed the use of a calculator) Children are allowed a pencil, ruler, tracing paper, protractor and mirror for Papers A & B

Reading Test 1 hour test to read through 3 to 4 texts The texts are not linked Texts are progressively more difficult Questions shorter, closed response items shorter, open response items longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Test One 45 minute test followed by a spelling test vocab 5- 10 marks 7- 14% sentence grammar 25- 35 mark 36- 50% punctuation 10- 20 marks 14- 28% spelling 20 marks 29% Even though the spelling is only 20 out of the 50 marks, this section is EXTREMELY important. Total of 70 marks

After the Tests Reading and Maths Papers will be sent away to external markers Return around the second week of July Analysis of the results Reporting to parents

What you can do at home Ensure children complete homework / Study Books (After Christmas) Read regularly and ask questions Provide writing opportunities Learn spellings times tables and number bonds Complete past test papers (google them) Ensure that children are rarely absent Use the ‘Links section’ of our website. During the week of the tests, ensure that the children are in school, on time and have had a good breakfast.
