Technology

Look Mom: No Wires! What is Bluetooth technology? Put simply, Bluetooth technology is a short-range wireless radio technology that allows electronic devices to connect to one another. Generally, Bluetooth has a range of up to 30 ft. or greater, depending on the Bluetooth Core Specification Version. Newer devices, using newer versions of Bluetooth, have ranges over 100 ft. Bluetooth wireless technology makes connections just like cables connect a computer to a keyboard, mouse, or printer, or how a wire connects an MP3 player to headphones. Bluetooth technology makes these same connections, except it does it without the cables and wires. With Bluetooth there is no more worrying about which cable goes where, while getting tangled in the mess.

What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth is a specification for the use of low-power radio communications to wirelessly link phones, computers and other network devices over short distances. The name "Bluetooth" is borrowed from Herald Bluetooth, who was a king in Denmark more than 1,000 years ago. He brought two different communities together to talk, successfully. Bluetooth technology was designed primarily to support simple wireless networking of personal consumer devices and peripherals, including cell phones, PDAs, and wireless headsets. The wireless signals transmitted in Bluetooth reach over short distances, typically 30 to 40 feet (10 meters). Bluetooth devices generally communicate at less than 1 Mbps. Bluetooth networks feature a dynamic topology called a piconet or PAN. Piconets contain a minimum of two and a maximum of eight Bluetooth peer devices. Devices communicate using protocols that are part of the Bluetooth Specification. Although the Bluetooth standard utilizes the same 2.4 Ghz range as b and g, Bluetooth technology is not a suitable Wi-Fi replacement. Compared to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth networking is much slower, a bit more limited in range, and supports many fewer devices.

How to: Pairing and Using a Bluetooth Headset

Pairing All Bluetooth devices require what is referred to as “Pairing” before they are able to be used Pairing is a mode that must be selected on a headset or speakerphone to allow your phone to connect to it and use any available functions Putting a headset or speakerphone in pairing mode is usually a very simple, process, however, it is different for each type of headset You can find out how to put a device in pairing mode by consulting the manual or do a “google” search for “pairing with (model number of device) Once a device is successfully paired and connected, it will automatically connect itself when it is powered on
