WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY? Assistive technology means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off-the-shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY: BOARDMAKER The Mayer-Johnson software program: Boardmaker, offers a 3,000 Picture Communication Symbol (PCS) library in either black/white or color, and is accompanied by any written word Symbols can be made in any size Present a relatively clear, 'uncluttered' representation

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY: TOBI S True Object Based Icons (TOBIs) Icons can be any line drawing, picture, etc. They are cut out in the actual shape or outline of the item they represents. The child can both see and feel the symbol and shape, and printed label Assisting students to readily understand the two- dimensional representation system.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY: PICTURE THIS Program that allows for the presentation of real photos, without risking ambiguous background clutter. Contains over 2,700 photos from numerous categories Used for creating schedules, communication, games, reading activities or sequence activies for following directions

CASE STUDY: ANDERSON No signs until age 3 Described as low tone with awkward motor skills and inconsistent imitation skills Assessed by The Communication Symbolic and Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (norm) The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was chosen to provide him with a consistent communication system By the end of the year, a video taken at preschool showed that Anderson was spontaneously using PECS for requests and protests. He was using speech along with his PECS

CASE STUDY: TAIT 12-year-old boy and was diagnosed at age 2 Participates in special education program Strengths: curious and visually astute Challenges: communication, impulsivity, and aggression Assessment: SCERTS® Assessment Process (SAP) (criterion) Made many communication gains Now able to use his AAC device to express feelings
