Calculating Body Mass Index Senior Health- Bauberger

Body Mass Index Body Mass Index (BMI): –A ratio of weight to height –Can be used to assess whether your weight calls within its healthy range –BMI charts take into account age and gender, since males and females grow at different rates

Body Mass Index BMI= [weight in lbs / (height in inches) 2 ] x 703 Steps to calculate BMI: –Multiply your height (in inches) by your height (square it) –Divide your weight (in pounds) by your height squared –Multiply the result by 703.

Body Mass Index Direct ways to measure BMI: –Skinfold Calipers: several measurements are taken at different locations on the body –Bod Pod: Subject enters a chamber, mass and volume are measured by air displacement… a VERY accurate but expensive method –Hydrostatic Weighing: One of the most common methods, done underwater and measures percentage of fat to lean muscle (weighed outside and then underwater) –Bioelectric Impedence Analysis Electrical current is sent through the body. Changes in the current are measured and used to calculate lean body mass and body fat.

Body Mass Index Calculate your BMI: BMI= [weight in lbs / (height in inches) 2 ] x 703

Body Mass Index Calculate this person’s BMI: –Weight: 201 lbs –Height: 72 inches BMI= [weight in lbs / (height in inches) 2 ] x 703

Body Mass Index Calculate this person’s BMI: –Weight: 267 lbs –Height: 65 inches Is this woman overweight? Obese? BMI= [weight in lbs / (height in inches) 2 ] x 703

Body Mass Index Calculate this person’s BMI: –Weight: 145 lbs –Height: 55 inches Is this woman overweight? Obese? BMI= [weight in lbs / (height in inches) 2 ] x 703
