Bird Migration NICOLE HARRIS

Content Area: Bird Migration Grade Level: 2 Summary: The purpose of this instructional power point is for students to learn about bird migration. Learning Objective: The students will be able to answer the questions with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: Birds and Migration Accomplishment: To know and understand why birds migrate to the south in the winter months.

Do you ever ask yourself why do birds fly to the south in the winter months?

What is migration? Birds migrate to the south to get away from extreme cold temperatures. A lot of birds fly south where the temperatures are not as cold in the winter months and seek to shelter.

How do birds know where to migrate? Are they migrating south? Some animals use landmarks to help them know where to migrate to. Elephants migrate by sight. Some animals depend on their sense of smell to travel when it is time to migrate. Birds use the sun to help them travel long distances in the winter months.

How do birds determine where to migrate? A. Smell B. Visual Landmarks C. Position of the Sun D. Sight

Good Job!!! Position of the sun is the correct answer…

How do birds know when to migrate? The bird’s body let’s them know when it is time to migrate. Each year at the same time the bird’s body releases hormones and these hormones let the birds know when it is time to migrate. The hormones also lets the birds know when it is time to store up food in the body. This is called a feeding frenzy. When the bird is constantly eating the body quickly turns the food into fat helping to keep the bird warm during the time of travel.

What tells birds when to migrate? A. Temperature B. Hormones C. Other birds communicate with them D. They know from the previous year

B is correct...You are doing an awesome job!!!

What else does hormones tell the birds? A. Feeding Frenzy B. Not to eat C. They are full D. It’s not time to fly south

Feeding Frenzy

What is it called birds fly to the south during the winter months? A. Moving B. Flying C. Migration D. Changing Environments

Awesome!!! C. (Migration) is correct

Go to this website and watch the video on bird migration http://pbskids.org/video/?category=Science/Animals&pid=NwwLVhjn2fQGXm8GRXZNGmJRdcbbcEkp

Go to this website and listen to the song about bird migration http://www.songsforteaching.com/animalsongs/birdmigration.htm

Conclusion We have successfully reviewed the section about bird migration and answered some questions about it. There also was some websites given to help with explaining what migration is and a website on a song about migration. Now it is up to you to remember these facts….You should be able to draw a diagram of where birds migrate in the winter months, list the ways in which animals know when it is time to migrate, list how do birds know where to migrate, and define the meaning of migration. Also while knowing the definition of migration you should also need to be able to explain what birds do when it is time for them to migrate.
