Lesson 8 THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS Basic Bible Teaching Lesson 8 THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS

Overview Review: The purpose of Miracles and Parables How Jesus completed his Father’s work Jesus’ teachings upset many people, particularly the Jewish leaders who plotted to kill Jesus Jesus’ final meal with his 12 apostles The importance of this meal for believers The Trial and Death of Jesus Jesus’ Resurrection, Immortality, and Ascension into heaven The promised return of Jesus Our hope – resurrection and immortality when Christ returns

What was the purpose of Jesus’ teaching and miracles? Review What was the purpose of Jesus’ teaching and miracles? Luke 5:24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins He said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." To show that Jesus had the power and authority from God to forgive sins (i.e. to be the savior of the world)

Parables Many times Jesus used “parables” to teach the people Review Many times Jesus used “parables” to teach the people Parables are stories with a hidden meaning They are about the Kingdom of God and how we must prepare for it now.

Jesus completed his Father’s work Review Jesus used all his strength and energy in preaching the gospel When he died, he was still a young man, but looked much older because of all the hard work he had done for God He was able to say the following when he talked to God in a prayer: I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. John 17:4 Jesus told men and women everything about God He taught them about the Kingdom of God, which will come on the earth when Jesus returns

The Death & Resurrection of Jesus

Jesus’ teaching upset many people "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. Matthew 10:34 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words Luke 19:47-48

The Jewish leaders plotted to kill Jesus Jesus exposed before all that the leaders did not lead their people in worship as God has commanded. Jesus also showed that they were dishonest and corrupt. This made the leaders angry and they wanted to kill him The Jews wanted to crucify Jesus, and they needed permission from the Roman governor – Pontius Pilate But first they had to arrest Jesus, but this was not easy because Jesus was so popular with the people.

The Betrayal of Jesus One of the 12 apostles, Judas, betrayed Jesus to the rulers And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. Luke 22:4-6

The Prophets spoke of Christ’s death Isaiah 53:3-10 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering …. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all…By oppression and judgment he was taken away.. For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. vengeance

The Final Meal with the 12 Apostles When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.“ Luke 22:14-16

The importance of this meal for believers For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.“ For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Jesus commanded his disciples (followers) to eat bread and drink wine to remember his life and death. Believers remember Jesus in this way, typically once a week.

The Trial of Jesus After Judas betrayed Jesus, the Jewish leaders were determined to kill Jesus Pilate, the Roman Governor, found no fault in Jesus, and tried to release him But the Jews insisted, and so Pilate allowed Jesus to be crucified

The Death of Jesus Jesus was crucified – nailed to a tree and left to die in great pain. The disciples were all very upset. They did not think that Jesus would die, let alone understand the need for him to die. They thought Jesus would become king at that time

The Resurrection of Jesus After 3 days God resurrected Jesus The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead …” Matthew 28:5-8

Immortality, Ascension & a Promised Return As a sinless representative of humanity, Jesus died for our sins. Because Jesus did no sin, God would not leave him in the grave. So God raised him from the dead and gave him immortal life – never to die again. After 40 days Jesus went up to heaven to be with God, and he will remain their until the time comes for him to return [Jesus] was taken up before their [the disciples’] very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. Acts 1:9-11

The Hope of the Bible Resurrection & Immortality Soon Jesus will return to set up God’s Kingdom When he comes, all faithful believers throughout time will be resurrected and made like him - immortal We can have confidence, because Jesus was brought back to life from the dead. What God did for Jesus, he will do for us. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him 1 Corinthians 15:20-23

Review Questions Who wanted to put Jesus to death? What does 'crucified' mean? What do the disciples of Jesus do every week to remember him? What happened three days after Jesus died? Where is Jesus now? What will Jesus do when he returns to the earth?

Next lesson Salvation Through Jesus Christ The importance of Christ’s sinless life, death and resurrection Repentance – what it means and why it is an essential first step Touch on the importance of Baptism (but more in Lesson 10) The wonderful gift promised to all those who repent and are baptized. How God can look at us as if we are “without sin” God doesn’t want anyone to perish, but it’s up to us to decide whether or not we want to respond to God’s call and follow Jesus
