CATEGORIES OF LIGHTING

Lighting 1. General DirectIndirect 2. Local (Task) 3. Accent

1. General lighting provides a uniform level of lighting throughout the room. It should light a room well enough for occupants to see clearly and move about safely. The amount of general lighting needed depends on the shape, size, and use of the room.

One category of general lighting is DIRECT LIGHTING. Direct lighting shines directly toward an object.

A second category of general lighting is INDIRECT LIGHTING. It is lighting directed toward a surface. Indirect lighting reflects off of ceilings and walls.

2. LOCAL or TASK LIGHTING focuses light on an area where it is most needed. Provides extra light for reading, cooking, sewing, etc.

3. ACCENT LIGHTING is aimed directly on a specific object to create a dramatic effect. This lighting is usually 3 times brighter than general light.

WAYS TO DELIVER LIGHT

NONSTURCTURAL LIGHTING includes lights that are not built in and can be easily moved and changed.

STRUCTURAL LIGHTING is any built-in lighting whose wiring is usually hidden.

Valance Lighting is mounted over a window and hidden by a valance. Light shines up and down.

BRACKET LIGHTS are like valance lights except they are mounted on a wall. Light shines up and down.

CORNICE LIGHTING is mounted near the ceiling and shines downward.

COVE LIGHTING is mounted near the ceiling directs light upward.

RECESSED DOWNLIGHTS (can lights) direct a beam of light from the ceiling downward.

SURFACE MOUNTED DOWNLIGHTS are similar to recessed lights, except the “can” is visible.

WALL WASHERS spread light over a wall from ceiling to floor.

SOFFITT LIGHTING is an enclosed box-like structure with a diffuser at the bottom.

LUMINOUS CEILING PANELS are fluorescent tubes placed under plastic panels.

STRIP LIGHTS are rows of incandescent bulbs.

TRACK LIGHTING is several light fixtures mounted on a metal strip.
