Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, ILIAS-GWA: The GW antenna network Raffaele Flaminio EGO and LAPP/CNRS Summary - History - GWA Objectives & Contents - Reporting process - Manpower - Other actions - Forthcoming meetings

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, GW networking: history Several attempt to get funds from the EU in the 90’s failed In 2002 EU launched FP6 ApPEC launched a coordinated action in the European astroparticle physics community to prepare a proposal for an I3 called ILIAS (Integrated Large Infrastructures for Astroparticle Science) to be submitted to the EU. Long process started - proposal preparation: 9/2002 – 3/ proposal submission: March partly approved in August 2003 (GW contents approved, neutrinos and cosmic rays discarded) - negotiations: fall 2003/spring projects start: April 1 st 2004 (now in the second year) - duration: 5 years -> it will end on March 31 st 2009 GWA Budget: 550 kEuros / ~200 scientists in ~35 labs….. Why doing it ? A) Opportunity to have more coordination in Europe (and indeed it did happen) B) GW experimental community enters the EU world - more funds expected to come via the EU in some future - hope to have a design study funded by the EU in FP7

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, GWA net: participants LAPP Annecy, University of Barcelona, University of Birmingham, Cardiff University, EGO Cascina, INFN Ferrara., INFN Firenze, INFN Frascati, MPI Garching, INFN Genova, University of Glasgow, MPI Golm, MPI Hannover, LZH Hannover, Universitat Illes Balears, Universitat Jena, INFN Legnaro, Leiden University, Imperial College London, IPN Lyon, INFN Napoli, OCA Nice, LAL Orsay, INFN Padova, Universite Paris VI, ESPCI Paris, INFN Perugia, INFN Pisa, CNR Roma, INFN Roma1, INFN Roma2, Universita di Trento, CNR-ITC Trento, Universitat Tubingen, University of Warsaw 35 institutions, 7 countries (France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain) All members of Virgo, GEO, AURIGA, NAUTILUS/EXPLORER, MiniGRAIL collaborations Groups involved in R&D for future detectors (including most of the LISA European groups)

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, YEAR 1YEAR 2YEAR3YEAR 4YEAR 5 Tasks and DeliverablesQ1Q1 Q2Q2 Q3Q3 Q4Q4 Q1Q1 Q2Q2 Q3Q3 Q4Q4 Q1Q1 Q2Q2 Q3Q3 Q4Q4 Q1Q1 Q2Q2 Q3Q3 Q4Q4 Q1Q1 Q2Q2 Q3Q3 Q4Q4 WP 3: A European strategy for future antennas Tasks: Working group and WEB site set-up Elaboration of short term improvement plan Presentation of short term plan to institutions Elaboration of ‘White book’ Presentation of ‘White book’ to institutions Writing of final report Deliverables: Annual Report WG3: A European Strategy for Future Antennas Objectives and Delivearbles - Determine objectives attainable trough short-term improvements Draft a plan for an European network of GW detectors at the 2010 horizon - Short term plan after 18 months - Long term plan: ‘White book’ defining the GW community objectives over 10 years period WG chaired by H. Lueck (MPI Hannover) and M.Punturo (INFN Perugia)

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, ILIAS reporting process Before the beginning of the project (winter 2004): - provide detailed implementation plan for the first 18 months - ask financial support for the first 18 months (EU gives money for 14 months) - get money After one year (April 2005) - provide annual report (referring to previous plan) - provide financial report (many thanks to Veronica Colautti!) - provide new detailed implementation plan for the next 18 months - ask financial support for the next 18 months - annual report evaluated - get money After two years (April 2006) - provide annual report ….. - ….. Mid-term report: to be provided by October 25 th, 2005 Annual report: to be provided by March 15 th, 2006

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Manpower: fellowships At the beginning of the project: fellowships not allowed for networking This changed last spring: “Within a NA (and of course JRA and TA), we are now allowed to hire PhD Students and Post-docs, with the restriction that we can justify them by the milestones and deliverables. Within ILIAS, I would like to emphasize that we should deal with those points very carefully in order not to diverge. So, the number has to be kept reasonable (with respect to the total budget) and rather well shared among different contractors / labs according the role played by them within ILIAS” from B. Saghai Meeting with working group chairpersons last March: decision to give priority to two fellowships 1) Post-doc dedicated to network data analysis (WG2) focus on Virgo-Bars joint data analysis 2) Post-doc or PhD student dedicated to GEO-Virgo joint commissioning (WG1) focus on noise characterization 1) Network data analysis: fellowship assigned last September 2) Joint GEO-Virgo commissioning: fellowship to be assigned soon

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Other actions (I) Visitor program (done) - supports short term visits (1 or 2 weeks) of staff researchers, post-docs and PhD students from any given laboratory of the network to any of the others - visit should be relevant to the network activities (commissioning of existing detectors, preparation or implementation of network data analysis, preparation of strategies for future detectors, …….. or any other networking activity) - how to use it?: send travel authorization form to one of the relevant working group chairpersons or to one of the network coordinators (K. Danzmann and/or R.F.) - infos and forms available at

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Other actions (II) Develop links with the theorists network “ILIAS/N6/ENTApP” (being organized) - working group dedicated to GW active in N6 - managed by Prof. K. Kokkotas (here with us today) - organization of a first common workshop in progress - content of 1 st meeting: have theorists presenting (and discuss) last evaluations of expected GW signals to an audience of data analysis and detectors experts - goals: better tune searches, have inputs for future GW detectors design, focus on most promising sources (from a detection point of view) - location: a place easily reachable (Rome?, Paris?, …) - when: probably in January - duration: ~ a couple of days (travel included)

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Other actions (III) Outreach (to be better thought) - it is possible to fund outreach initiatives within the network budget - edit a booklet ? - Ex. Booklet dedicated to undergrond labs in Europe published by Gran Sasso using the Undeground Labs Network funding (also part of ILIAS) - realize a short movie illustrating the GW network of detectors in Europe and the link with other astrophysical instruments ? - proposals are welcome Other ideas welcome (should be networking activites)

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, ILIAS: future meetings “Astroparticle Phyisics in FP7” - Munich, November 23-25, goal: discuss and coordinate initiatives in Astroparticle Phyisics in view of FP7 ILIAS Annual general meeting (equivalent to the Prague meeting in February 2005): - Gran Sasso, March 2-4, 2006

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Munich meeting: agenda

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Munich meting: agenda

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, Munich meeting: agenda

Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, FP7 preparation meeting Agenda explanation from B. Saghai “The "Experimental status & projects" is expected to give an overview of the field and introduce very briefly the future plans.” “Those plans are supposed to be presented under the "R&D" topic with the relevant number of speakers.” “Finally, in "Infrastructures" talk, we expect to learn about the present status of different infrastructures (strong and weak points) and especially to learn about future (say within 10 years scale) improvements or constructions.”
