Let’s start with external…

Man vs. Man Definition: an external struggle, mental or physical, between 2 characters. The struggle is usually between the protagonist and antagonist.

Man vs. Man Other popular examples include: Wyle Coyote vs. Road Runner Monk vs. priscilla Batman vs. Joker Austin Powers vs. Dr. Evil

Man vs. Nature Definition: an external struggle between a character and Mother Nature Mother Nature includes weather, animals, insects, sickness and epidemics

Man vs. Society Definition: An external struggle between a character and the laws of beliefs of a group Society could involve poverty, politics, social norms, expectations or values

Man vs. Society Shrek: In this film the protagonist, a very sweet but physically unattractive ogre, fights to change the kingdom’s mind about ogres…he wants humans to see that ogres aren’t all bad!

Man vs. Society Other examples include: The Wave Borat Schindler’s List

Now let’s do internal…

Man vs. self Definition: The struggle of a character within his/herself These struggles include feelings, conscience or fear

Man vs. Self The Water Boy: Bobby Bouche, a sheltered “mama’s boy”, battles with himself over whether to disobey his mother and play football or obey his mother and remain the water boy for the team.

Man vs. Self Other Examples: Tommy Boy Priscilla battling to decide if she should stay quiet or help melvin Rocky in Rocky Balboa (all six movies center around Rocky’s internal struggle)

What’s next? Now turn to page 23 in your notebook. Label each square like the example in the picture. Now, make sure you’ve cut out all 12 scenarios. Read each scenario and decide what type of conflict is represented. ***Use page 22 to help you!! Glue each scenario under the correct heading!!
